Just give it a try to see if you like it. Can always refund if you haven't played longer than 2H.
Epic isn't a compulsory thing any more. I skipped the Epic account thing completely. As for the game, I really like it, TBH.
The criticism is probably because the game stopped working on the day of release according to a couple of YouTube reviews I watched. (I missed that bit, as I hadn't bought the game at that point) Other people are having trouble getting the game to launch, but the cause is unknown ATM. Other people criticize because that's what flame-baiters and Clown Award Farmers do with EVERY new game these days.
-no character customization, we can't hide the mask either
-Yes, the camera view is nauseating, no Zoom.
-no FOV options
-the game looks blurred at times, even foggy, even when the blur is removed; when you talk to certain pnj, they're not precise, you see them a bit blurred.
-When you're walking in shallow water, you're walking very slowly, and you think to yourself, “Walk, go faster! “But no, the character is very slow in water where you can walk.
-Where you place your first building, normally in a “safe” zone, the character isn't very robust, and you have spider nests, with spiders killing you all the time, so you always have to be careful... and when you get killed, your life doesn't come back, so you constantly have to look for berries to heal yourself, (they made a fix this morning for more robustness and more life when you die).
-No shortcut keys, Switch to English keyboard every time you start the game.
-The game interface is a wheel with which you place your tools and weapons.
You can't choose between (1,2,3,4) to pick up a weapon; you have to use this wheel, which takes longer.
-Crashes, black screens.
Opinions are divided between positive and negative.
Here are some opinions.
I haven't asked for a refund, I hope they'll sort it all out.

Question I always ask is is it ready for EA or have they rushed out a early beta to grab the cash.
If they release a beta people get to play it until it goes EA and still have an option to refund. Dropping it as EA means u get 2 hours to try it which is not long enough to be able to refund.
Yep, also the same people that use KickStarter in the same way they order stuff off of Amazon Prime and get totally crotch hurt that the KickStarter project couldn't ship out in time for XMas. Really unbelievable.
Pretty much a universal recipe for generalized outrage being reflected in some of the reviews.
I dont want to sit constantly through lengthy dialogue in my survival/crafting game.
More modular buildings like in Rust, where I can shape buildings the way I want, would be nice too.
I do like the game tho, especially the atmosphere, art design and biosphere repopulating aspects.
That's just frustrating. Several survival craft games have done this recently. I want to see my character's face.
It'd obviously not a cop out for 'we don't know know how to model faces'. It's not a 'oh this planet doesn't have oxygen'. You literally see NPCs, with faces, on multiple occasions.
