Game is officially in maintenance mode, but Funcom being Funcom anything could happen in the future if they see money in it.
Low population, but yes. Of the 2 servers the PvE one (Crom) is more active. Most seem to have given up on the Pvp server (Fury). Max level is 80 which you can get to as a F2p player.
The game has additional Buy to play zones; Turan is an alt lvl 50 leveling zone. Valheim is a 'scale to your level' zone for lvl 20's to 80's, but it's a closed instance area so just you or someone your grouped with. Dragonspine is a lvl 80+ plus (while the max level is 80 some zones like Dragonspine or those in the Godslayer expac have lvl 80 mobs that are more powerful. It's almost like you have the normal lvl 80, than lvl 80 tier II, III etc....
More popular Raids are still done, a lot aren't. There's some guilds in the game that do regular raid runs and you might be able to get in with one of them once you reach cap, although some say that newcomers aren't the most welcome.
There's a Facebook group with the same name as this forum that also posts / schedules raids that's more new player friendly.
The 1st Wed (US) of each month starts a week long World Boss event ( https://forums-archive.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?188100-World-Bosses-collated-data )(scroll down about mid way for the current information).
The last Wed of each month starts a week long Pvp 'festival) in one of the Border Regions - no clue how popular those are.
The Monday of each week there's a 'raid of the week' run. You can find which one and sign up for it via the last? button on the panel bar at the top of your screen.

Welcome to the game. Take your time on the starter island of Tortage as it is the most amazing part of the game. Expect a bit of a drop off once you leave as the quest strings aren't as tight and voice acting is few and far between.
If you know Conan lore from the books you'll spot little things through out the game that show up in the books. While the movies are good and the Turan adventure pack came directly from the 3rd movie, there's not a lot of lore in them so don't go looking for movie stuff in game.
Have fun, read the quest write up's and pick some of the off the wall replies and have fun with the back and forth with the NPC quest givers. Don't worry if they shut you down cuz you tee'd them off, just start the dialogue back up and pick a different answer.
Lot's of zones and stuff to see in game.
With that being said, you don't have to get the expansion right away. Enjoy the already massive amount of free content, learn the game and the character(s) you're playing.
Oh, and here's a guide for World Bosses, the forums are honestly a mess to read: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3301732362
