Conan is a gritty looking game and while some of the top level armor looks pretty good, you should accept the fact that what you'll get on the way up isn't going to be the most amazing looking stuff. it's not that type of game.
Luckily there is a vanity system so if you do find something you like, you can slot it and that's how you'll look.
There's also just cosmetic / vanity clothing and armor you get from special vendors using gilding coins that come from the normal daily log in bonuses (it'll be back after the anniversary event ends June 9th).
Here's a couple 'fashion' sites to look at the different stuff in game:

Classes. First do you want to melee or do ranged? And if ranged - with weapons or magic?
Personally I think my ranger is fun to play, also my Tempest of Set (ToS), while my Dark Templer is a good solid class that can take and deal out punishment but much more flexible than a Guardian with it's low DPS.
I'd have to say they're all interesting to play as each has it's own unique quirks you have to take into account to be success.
If you come up with some specific's it'll be easier to answer your question. Other than that, Welcome!
A little hint; since if you're a F2p player you only get 1 character slot some things you can do. Use the solo beginning part to try out the different classes, just make, play & delete to see which might work. While you don't have even 1% of the skills you'll get see what types of weapons they can use, how squishy they are etc..... can help with the decision making.
Also Funcom doesn't have a problem with multiple accounts so if you want to make 2 accounts to make it easier to test characters that's fine as long as you don't pvp them against each other and try to cheat.
I also shouldn't have assumed that Ranger is the most boring class - I have no knowledge about the game and that was the first thing I stumbled upon when trying to get some info about classes on the official forums
Would you say melee classes are more fun to play?
(Here I go again) - Over at the official forums people suggested new players should take a melee class because melee classes have combos and the combat feels fluid.
Usually (in other MMOs) mage and caster classes are boring and they don't feel like they are in combat. These classes usually stay further behind and constantly spam the 2 buttons their most powerful spells are bound to.
^ I'd like to know if that's the case in this game - does it actually feel satisfying to play a Priest or Mage class in combat?
One more question regarding fashion.
The gear you linked in your post - can I earn / craft / collect all of these armor pieces as a purely Free to play player, or are some armor sets locked behind premium purchases?
Thank you for posting the links to the various armor sets! I really like the late game fashion and all the armors in this game look very nice!
I'd say melee classes give you more of what made AoC unique; the combo system; Ranger, Magic Users and the like play alot like any other game, but melee ...... ah there you really do have to control the fight, know where to place your blows and what blows to use.
I will say that with my Ranger, ToS and Necro I just cycle through my specials as the cool downs clear. Now people will say that successful Tanks just cycle through theirs too, but for most of the other melee's you pick the attack based on where the targets shields aren't.
I find them all fun, but I know I don't have to 'be as engaged' with my ranged characters.
Fun / Satisfying? In a group, knowing you've not only helped with dps, but also helping keep the team alive I'd say YES, and you'll really need to pay attention to the whole fight as a healing class vice just your little world as a melee type.
While solo? Harder to say and will depend on you more than anything else. I know I enjoy playing my ToS and Ranger's just as much as my DT. My Necro was made more as an RP one, and using the pets to fight with is a bit boring to me. I have a HoX, but that class is kind of a one trick pony and I don't play him that much. My Assassin was an auto-80 and I've played her a bit, but really don't know HOW to play her so couldn't really say on that class.
Fashion: Yes and a small no. There is 1? outfit that you can only get from a running sub reward 60 days / 120 days? something. You also can look on the AH, but alot will cost more than the 10 gold limit F2p players have so that area would also mean VIP's can get and you can't. Now for those situations if you have a VIP friend who's willing to buy it for you and you pay him back in installments is a way around the gold cap.
All the rest you can get as a F2p player. For the Gilding Vendors; you'll earn a few tokens each month from the log in bonus panel. You can also get them in one of the buy from store loot boxes (not worth it) and from a drop during one of the Halloween quests.
Each month there's a boss called the World Boss that shows up across the world for a week and they drop both lvl 80 loot, but also Vanity armors. Anyone can join in as it's like a big open instance fight. On Wed it'll show up in Turan, so it does show up in the B2p regions, but if you just skip that month, the next month will be in a open area.
For the other one's in those sites, you'd just need to farm the NPC's in the area's where they drop and hope for the best.
Now when you first create your character look down at the bottom left on the first panel and you'll see a box labeled 'Unconquered'. If you check that you'll be playing a special 'sub-game' where you're trying to see how high of level you can get without dying. Rewards are at lvl 20, 40, 60 and 80 and the rewards are ...... vanity outfits! While I think they're a bit too blindlingly WHITE, it is something. Also if you make it to 80 you'll get a FULL set of vanity weapons. And it's a good way to challenge yourself.
Feel free to keep your questions coming.
Claims came from the original CD box, the Godslayer CD box, certain Steam purchases, the new unconquered mode and if you were ever VIP.
As to the character slots; how old is your account? The dropping to only 1 slot for brand new accounts doesn't go back all that far, plus since they put that into effect, Funcom has given us 2 character slots as gifts. My F2p account has a total of 3 character slots because of that.
You'd really have to say when and how you created your account to pin down the why's?
I decided to go with Tempest of Set for my first character.
I will definitely try the other classes you recommended (especially Herald of Xotli, Conqueror and Dark Templar) when I decide to make a new character.
I have one more question about Unconquered characters.
Is it difficult to get to level 80 on your first character without dying?
Are there many difficult quests of combat encounters I should look out for or will I generally be ok if I just take my time and complete every quest I get?
Many hands will be turned against you on your journey........
Seriously. Not only will the NPC's be trying to kill you, but many have complained about lag killing them too. The game can get funky at times and while I've never had that problem on my unconq character, I have found some 'dead spots' in game that guarantee lag problems.
OK, general problems; boss fights, fights where you have to fight more than 1 or 2 at a time so you really need to pay attention to your pulls. Make sure the wandering guy is clear prior to starting the fight, fall back after the pull to ensure you stay clear, watch for respawns.
If you overlevel prior to taking on the bosses you'll be in a better position of not dying.
Hard spots; Tortage - the Bat Demon boss, the Corpse Harvester? Boss in the Underhalls, the final Tortage fight.
Sygia - the Male Chicken Handler (darn censor program). This has become kind of an in game joke, even lvl 80's get their butts handed to them by this lvl 28 so ignore that quest. Most of the rest of the Sygia stuff til you get into your 70's and go to Khesetta is fairly easy, especially if your up 1 or 2 levels. Although you can get mobbed by spiders when you go after the Spider Queens venom. And I'd put off the Pustan quests as those guys are in tight quarters and pulling extras is fairly easy. Also the first boss fight there's a killer.
Agualiona - The Thunder River quests are generally on the harder side of things. In the Wildlands there's a quest hub north of the first city. In it is a quest where you have to go a grave and investigate, the boss that appears is over powered even if you're up a couple of levels so stay clear of him.
Cimmiera - At one point you get routed to go collect arrows and other quests in a snowy area, lot's of MOB's, some wandering and it's easy to get in over your head. Also stay clear of the Mammoth Riders and the guys that are bigger than the Vanir out there. Both are very tough and hard to kill.
In general watch out for the stupid stuff, falling off a cliff, falling while climbing / trying to grab a spot to go down things like that. My one Unconq toons life ended when I fell off that little bridge beside the Cat House in Tortage when my character took that extra step after combat.
