In your Feats one of the sections allows you to boost the aggro value of your pets. Putting that (and whatever else you can find) up to max will make their aggro higher and higher; hopefully to the point that they are seen as the bigger threat than you.
And the lower levels I just used mine to pull the targets closer so I can hit them with my ranged spell. At my current level I have 8 pets (half of one type that does health damage and the other half does mana damage). Unless I use them on very low level targets I still end up having to fight myself.
Somewhere at the highest levels they'll be powerful enough to do ALL the fighting for you. You just have to hang in there for the long run.
You will get a variety of different demons for you to summon as you level & one from your AA Alternate Advancement.
Necro on the other hand is completely different.
