Anna: Extended Edition - Game freeze and low framerate

I've just bought this game and I'm playing the Extended Edition on maxed out 1920x1200 settings with AA and everything enabled. I got into the sawmill and through the door beyond but when I turn the wheel next to the window the game repeatedly freezes. I then have to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to go to the desktop and then open a command prompt to use taskkill /f /im "anna.exe" /t to close the game as there's no mouse pointer!!! I'm using Windows 8 Pro on an i7-4770K, 16 GB, GTX 780 PC. Everything is running at stock clocks and I don't have issues with any other games (I have over 350 installed).

I've also noticed some really bad framerate drops to 15 fps but only once I entered the sawmill. This is utterly unacceptable in a game as graphically functional as this, particularly as I have no problems playing Crysis 3, Metro: Last Light or any other game that is far more demanding that this game.

The game itself looks intriguing but the bugs and poor performance are really killing the game. I presume turning the wheel is needed to solve a puzzle, in which case I'm stuck because my game just freezes EVERY time. I'm doing another game validation but I suspect that won't fix anything.

Also why does this game require FOUR clcks to even start?

1. Click on the Steam game icon to open the Anna Launcher.

2. Click on Anna or Anna: Extended Edition from the Launcher to bring up yet another launcher for the selected version.

3. Click on the button to sign in, which that finally brings up a Play button.

4. Click on this Play to finally load the thing!!!

Utterly cumbersome and annoying. Can we just have seperate icons for the original and EE versions and have the game auto-sign in on launching please?

I'm totally with you on the cumbersome DRM that they put in this game (from an indie publisher; why?). Steam itself is DRM enough, thank you.

The sawmill frame drop / crashing / seizure-inducing strobing lights is a known issue, aparently introduced along with the last patch. I'm in the same boat and annoyed that I can't play the game I just bought. The team has responded on these forums that they've found the issue and are working on it. So hopefully we'll have a new patch soon that doesn't introduce yet more game-breaking bugs.

I'm wanting to love this game, since it seems really interesting, but they're sure not making it easy; between the DRM launcher and shoddy programming.

I agree about the DRM. It is a bit much.

Anyways... about the low framerate/crash problem that started for a lot of players at the last patch... devs are working on it guys don't worry. There have been a bunch of similar posts since the last patch. One of the devs already posted an apology and assurances that they are working on it whithin another thread. Hang in there boys!

Try the original version if you havn't played it yet. It doesn't suffer from the same bug and is different enough from the EE that it's worth playing through anyway.

My game auto updated to Extended Edition and now it freezes up and I have to end process. I can only go about 1-3 minutes between freezes. 3 is the longest. I'm on windows 7, 64-bit. This is frustrating.

what do you mean it "auto updated to Extended Edition"? I don't think you can have the extended edition without having the original as well. you click to choose which one you want to play when you first try to launch the game...

It's really not that difficult to comprehend. Read it 5 times if you have to. It means my game auto updated itself to the extended edition. Yes I have a choice between the two that I want to play but I didn't even try to obtain extended edition, it updated to it on it's own. It doesn't matter because normal mode freezes too, just less.

Yup the game has a new really bad freeze bug. I played and finished the game a week or 2 ago. Worked fine then. but now it freezes all the time! All the time!

Same problem here. The game worked well when I played for an hour one week ago. Today, I returned to it and it froze five times in fifteen minutes. My OS is Windows 7, 64-bit. I guess that the recent patch fixed something but ruined something else.

Sometimes I forget that the internet makes people forget how to treat others with respect... especially when they are just trying to be helpful.

Anyways... you made it sound like it updated to EE and suddenly the original version was unavailable to you. Grats on being super vague lol. Yeah they added the EE and now the game has an option so you can pick which game you want to play so why even say that it "auto updated to the extended edition"? I mean it did that for all of us but you made it sound like you thought you got some different update than the rest of us. It's confusing when someone states something that is common knowledge but then words it in a way that makes it sound like they are trying to tell you something different.

Why does Anna have such bad performance? Even on the lowest graphic settings, still really bad.

I'm running an extreme i7 processor 8core, 16GB DDR3 Ram, an Solid State HDD!!!

All other games run well, apart from this game... I feel a little ripped off :-(

does anyone have any tips on how to improve performance on these rubbish games?

What kind of bad performance? I'm on an i5-2500k, 16 gb ram, 2 video cards and other than the crashing issue previously everything runs and performs just fine. The game does not have state of the art graphics if you were expecting something like skyrim.
