So I bought this game AGES ago, but could never get it to run on my old laptops (and was unaware of Steam refunds at the time). Now it finally runs boots, but I gave it my CD key, they had me make an account for some reason, and then they say my product key is already in use. Not sure how that's possible given that I was never able to play the game.

One way to resolve it is to play this game on Linux, it doesn't ask for a key there.

This has been going on for 8 years. The company who bought it are selling personal information the marketing companies. Dreampainters hasn't owned this game since 2013.

Well then I'm glad I gave them a throwaway email account for that sign up. It looked sketchy as ♥♥♥♥.

The keys don't exist. It's a nice little grift kalypso have going here. And unfortunately it's legal.

Surprisingly, I've asked Kalypso directly ([e-mail]), providing the purchase details like date and transaction ID, and their response was:

This error occurs if you try to play the game with a different email address, then the one when you first activated the key.
To use it again we have to detach it first. This way you can activate it with a new email address

So, I've provided them the key from what Steam was giving me, and now I was able to register on my relevant email. Launcher even haven't asked me to manually insert it.
Must admit, that might be the case that ~10 years ago I had another email address which was attached to kalypso acc ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
