Echoes of the Living

Echoes of the Living

Good demo, but!
Finished playing the demo yesterday, I spent around 3hrs on it total so honestly gotta give the devs credit because I think I never played such a long demo for an indie game. Should have been able to finish it under 2hrs but I died once against the final boss (a bit too bullet spongy TBH) and I backtracked A LOT during my first attempt.

This was a really great experience overall because it gave me instant nostalgia about Resident Evil 2/3 and I did not come across any particular game breaking bugs (except one freeze when picking up the gasmask). However I think it probably relies way too much on that nostalgia feeling.

I mean, similarities with RE2/3 are way too numerous:
- begining of the game is almost the same as 2, with a slight 3 touch when banging the first door
- city looks way too similar to Racoon City IMO, it's almost as if it were the missing chapter of Racoon City events
- green, red and blue herbs that can be combined is definitely RE signature
- gun powder that can be combined to craft ammo is RE3 signature
- floppy disks aka ink ribbons is RE signature
- zombies, crows, giant spiders and dogs as foes is RE signature
- G mutant clone as boss
- zombie arms out of the window
- Warehouse layout is exactly the same as in RE3 (I know it's intentionnal)
- going through the sewers
-...

Everything felt 100% RE to be honest. I know it is meant to be so, and this is probably the main reason why it felt so good to play I admit, but this is also why this game lacks a bit personnality so far. Don't get me wrong, if you choose to stick to it and release the game like that, I will probably buy it and enjoy it from start to finish, but I think it would be great if you have the opportunity to find your own way somehow, and make it a bit more original.

Anyway, I was wondering if there were differences between Liam and Laurel playthrough? I played as Laurel and only launch Liam's version afterwards to see if it is different but although the opening slightly differs it seemed to be the same as soon as we reach the Pub so I didn't bother replaying through the full game once again.

Liam get's different Magnum that holds 8 bullets instead of Laruel's Revolver that holds 6 bullets. He is also able to upgrade the pistol which becomes very powerful killing Zombie's with 2-4 shots maximum. Laruel gets the SMG. Also I felt like Liam took a bit more damage than Laruel. Other than that it's the same thing for both. I'm sure their paths diverge more in the full game release. For Final boss, just make sure you craft 8-10 Magnum bullets before the fight and that should be more than enough to put him down. Took me 16 Magnum shots with Liam or 1 reload. Didn't need any other weapon.
IT'S ALL BUGGY. WHEN YOU GET ONLINE. THE CHARACTER CAN'T WALK AFTER THAT, WHEN YOU TAKE THE GAS MASK, THE CHARACTER SAT DOWN AND HUNG IN 1 POSITION, NOTHING WORKS. A BUGGY GAME.

SMG is equal to upped pistol in terms of power but lacks critical chance, which pops some zeds heads. SMG gives you another 70 bullets, so it`s somewhat equal. And liam gets 1 more zed in sewer section before boss.

there is the "bugs" section for such. But i'd recommend switching window mode for that and lowering some graphic options, as well as not alt tabbing before that section

Well that's interesting, thanks for the info.
Does it mean that Liam won't find the SMG at all? Are the gun upgrade parts located where the SMG is in Laurel's playthrough?

Regarding final boss yeah, that's what I did on my 2nd attempt. His attack aren't too hard to avoid so killing him with basic weapons is clearly possible anyway, but it gets boring kinda fast due to the amount of ammo required, so I went for the extra magnum rounds as well.

I unloaded 14 magnum shots into the final boss and it still didn't die. It's possible I missed, what with the terrible aiming. Still, what a terrible boss. Now I have to spend thirty minutes to get back to it.

Turns out I wasn't hitting it. I beat it with 3 or 4 magnum rounds to spare.
