How do I attack the bird?
I forgot and the "help" doesn't explain how.

When he's about to attack with that spin thing, block it. If the bird is stunned and it's near the ground, punch it. If it's stunned higher than your character's head, kick it.

I remember having trouble with timing blocks in my first few encounters with the hawk. I've found that it helps to hold the block button, not just tap it, and err on the side of blocking too early (but not way too early -- wait until he starts to spiral). I'm not sure if holding block instead of tapping is supposed to make a difference (in fact, the in-game help tells you not to!), but it works fine for me.

Thanks, I'll try both of your tips next time I play!

The wierd thing was I was blocking him successfully, but my attacks weren't seeming to connect consistently, and no damage seemed to be done to the hawk (after I posted I read the bird is a hawk). This was for the hawk battle just outside the castle. I ended up having to quit the game and restart.

Same thing happened to me. I blocked the strike, tried to attack and could only hit after three or four failed strikes. An no health was deduced from the hawk. Any tips?
This damned bird is too difficult. It's too hard recognize right high of that bird to select correct button. Both looks almost the same, what a stupid idea. I run thru whole game easily and now I dying and dying and dying like an idiot in a chickenfight, great.

Final boss was much easier imho.

I understand that it is old thread, but for future generations I'll share advice about hawk. When fighting him for the first time (tutorial mode), try to remember its position when blocking, kicking and punching. If you block him successfuly, he will either rise up or fall down in slow-mo...but don't hit him yet! Wait like 2 seconds, he will stay in place for an instant and that is right time to either punch or kick him. With this in mind, you shouldn't have any troubles with it. No idea if there are any easier or more efficient ways of dealing with it.
