What do you find silly about them, by the way, if you don't mind me asking? I always thought they were logical and quite intuitive. In practice, they seem to work across a really large variety of game types and so by customising them with a single game type in mind, I feel people risk putting themselves at a disadvantage later on, after they've diversified the pool of schemes that they enjoy.
using the left hand for doing movements would only be useful if you want to quickly move the camera on large maps with your worm's movement. using a left thumb on the laptop touchpad, however, is more comfortable to me :P
