Worms Armageddon

Differences between original and Steam version?
I still have my CD of W:A from when I got the Triple Pack many years back. Is there any benefit to getting the Steam version if my old version is still working? I love this game so much and pretty much want to throw my money away at it, but I'd like to at least have one good reason to buy it again.

From what I understand it's basically the same version, but any future patches will be applied through steam (just ease of use, i assume the game itself can still be patched like before), and I know by default some voice packs are removed for not being politically correct, like the Rasta pack or whatever it was called.
it uses the same 3.7.2.1 version, however it doesn't require a CD. also the WA.exe is slightly different, but in concern of WormKit modules all of them are currently compatible with the Steam version.
Pink Mist: Does that mean there will no longer be patches for the computer version, or just that it'll happen automatically? Also, I heard something about a Steam overlay; what's that about?

there will always be patches for both versions. 3.7.2.1 was the first synchronous update release.
Steam overlay is accessed by pressing Shift+Tab in any of the games you purchased on Steam

hello, I know this is so old thread but I will try anyway...

Tell me - is it possible to add your own speech and if my steam friend will hear it when playing?

If your friend also installs that speech locally (and into the same directory), then yes. User\Speech

I suggest that you both download and install these 3 soundbank packs containing in total almost 700 soundbanks! It's a one-time install which means you'll have tons of sounds to choose from for yourself, and a very good chance you'll be able to hear someone else's custom soundbank if they're using one. WinRAR can be used to open the files (weird .tgz format). They go into the \Worms Armageddon\User\Speech folder.

Auto-download would be nice -- so that you could easily share soundbanks you make yourself with others -- but this is the next-best thing.

Auto-download would not be nice because a soundbank can easily take over 5 MB, and many people have low upload (or download) speeds. Also, it would be too easy to annoy someone with a bad soundbank.
Problem 1 would be resolved if a question popped up on such occasions that'd show the target size and allow to decline the proposed soundbank, and problem 2 would be resolved if the only auto-downloadable soundbanks would be the ones that are in an official soundbank database, where people submit their creations for review, with a possibility to ignore certain soundbanks on the local computer.

Good points StepS. Those are better solutions to both 'problems' than a basic "enable/disable soundbank sharing" checkbox. The wsbdb soundbank website still says "coming soon", despite having those packs for download. I wonder what they are/were planning..

For soundbanks, local caching would be a crucial feature, since every player would be potentially sending/receiving up to 5 soundbanks at once, to and from each of the other players.

Theoretically, to reduce loading times, soundbanks could download during the game and replace default sounds as they are loaded, sort of like the "progressive map loading" idea someone suggested where map color info is added as it loads. Unlike maps and PX data, custom sound files are not needed in order to start the game.

With household fiber and gigabit connections becoming more common, 5MB (even times 5) won't be a hurdle for long. And if a modern compression codec like ogg vorbis was somehow hacked into the game, the size could be considerably less.

On a similar topic, map caching and an ignore command (or vote +/-) for maps would be nice. Hostingbuddy seems to always pick the same few maps that I've skipped 10000 times. Some of those maps are broken entirely. I'd imagine the wmdb hosting bill is pretty expensive.

I don't mean to knock the existing features we have, which are excellent, by suggesting these other things..

Happy new year all =)
