To increase the number of worm placement holes:
1. Refer to this page[worms2d.info] for the following steps
2. Create your map in the map editor
3. Left click the preview button (Button 4) to preview your created map
4. Right click the preview button (Button 4) to convert the map into a colour map
5. Left/right click (hold shift to fine-tune) the worm placement holes button (Button 16) until you have at least 48 placements. This button accurately calculates the possible worm positions on the map, so you can rely on it to provide exactly what you want as long as you provide enough placements for the amount of worms you wish to play with.
If you still get stuck with manual placement sometime, there is also a kind of hacky workaround for it, but it only works in network games. Basically what you do is ask every player in the game to type /away or /afk into the chat and wait until every worm is placed, then have everyone type something into the chat (or simply close it with page up) and voila, random placement!
You can also use bigger maps generated by MapGEN[worms2d.info] to avoid this.
