Windowed WA???
Hello,
I recently downloaded my WA, which is my first Steam game, so I'm very unfamiliar with Steam. I want to play WA in a windowed mode and have downloaded d3d9wnd, but when I open WA, the window can't be resized and doesn't show the menu. I can only see the background moving. Is there a way to fix this? I have Windows 7. Thanks in advance!!!

Hi. Are you using multiple monitors? If so, how are they positioned? Does this happen all the time or only once?
You can not resize the window, by the way. And until you start playing the actual game, you also can't move the window.

Thanks for the reply. I am using multiple monitors (2). The primary is on the left, and the secondary is on the right. It's actually a docked laptop hooked to two monitors.

The resizing isn't a big deal, though the window is pretty small (6 inches x 4 inches maybe?), it's just the fact that once I open the game, I can't progress past the menu screen because I can't see the menu.

Does the laptop's screen remain active when you connect the two other monitors? Or do you disable it?
I'm not really sure what might be causing the problem. So far only a few people reported this, and only on a few multi-monitor systems.
What happens is the "body" of the menu is misplaced somewhere. The graphical and physical representation of the frontend are separate, and due to some bug (which is not known yet), they might become separate from each other. I haven't been able to reproduce this problem in neither of my VMs, nor physical TV connected to the laptop.
Now I might make a logger to track what happens at window creation stage, to see where it might have resulted.
Can you try enabling the "FullscreenAlternative" or "Fullscreen" options (they only affect the menu screens)? Does anything appear differently there?

The laptop display does not remain active. I tried enabling both options, then one at a time, but neither really helped to my end goal. I would like to have the ability to play this at work, which for me means the ability to quickly switch to an excel sheet, etc. without the screen blanking and having to free up the mouse. Is this even possible?

Yes, it's very possible. I'd like to help but your sentence "when I open WA, the window can't be resized and doesn't show the menu. I can only see the background moving." is confusing to me. Could you maybe take a screenshot of what you see?

Also if possible please go to your Worms folder and open wkD3D9Wnd.ini in Notepad and copy-paste it here. Thanks.

He probably means something like this[puu.sh]. This basically means that the "soul" of the frontend escaped somewhere due to some (yet undiscovered) reason. This happened on a few multi-monitor systems and I cannot reproduce it.
The easiest way to have a fix for your problem would be to add me to your friend list and connect to each other via TeamViewer, where I'd be able to see what makes the "soul" of the frontend escape on your system.
Also, the "fullscreen" option only affects the frontend. When you start playing the game, it's switched to windowed mode anyway, and you don't have the screen blanking when you minimize or restore the game.

That is not what I was expecting. I don't know what to suggest other than keep experimenting with stuff. If anyone can help you it's StepS, the creator of d3d9wnd.

For now, playing without d3d9wnd will at least let you see the menu, as long as your laptop can display 640x480. Shift-Esc will let you minimize from the in-game quickly. But until you get d3d9wnd working you will have annoying resolution changes before and after every game.

I assume there's no chance wkSuperFrontend or wkWndMode would do anything different?

FWIW I use d3d9wnd on Windows 7 on two monitors and it works flawlessly and is a huge asset to the game, especially for dual monitor setups. It is very worth getting it to work if you can.

Your GPU driver preserves the 4:3 aspect ratio in the menus. You can only use a custom resolution when you start playing a game. If you want 4:3 to be stretched to 16:9, open your GPU driver's settings, or try Ctrl+Alt+F11 if the key combinations are already enabled.

That's normal. The frontend runs at 640x480, and you see this as a 640x480 borderless window.
If you want, you can stretch it. Open wkD3D9Wnd.ini, then, in the [FrontendSettings] section, change Stretch=0 to Stretch=1.

I know what you meant by the screenshots. Your GPU driver preserves the 4:3 aspect ratio in the menu, otherwise everything looks squashed. If you don't want the aspect ratio to be preserved in any case, then try opening your settings (nvidia/amd control panel) and go to the section where scaling methods are configured. Or try pressing Ctrl+Alt+F11 when in the menu, if the key combinations are enabled. This will switch through one of the scaling methods.

yes, setting it to Stretch will stretch the menu in windowed mode. Aspect ratio is not preserved.

Go into your Worms folder, find and load wkD3D9Wnd.ini in Notepad, and under the FrontendSettings heading, change "Stretch=0" to "Stretch=1".
