- WA:AE doesn't have crossplay with WA on PC, nor does it have crossplatform support
- it has been datamined that WA:AE runs on an older engine version of WA (3.7.2.2, latest at the time of writing is 3.8.1, or read https://worms2d.info/Latest )
- WMD doesn't have crossplatform support
even on launch day, WA:AE on Switch seemed whack, because it took a livestreamer (speaking non-english) to get a single lobby full, otherwise the WormNET was empty. I cannot comment on its current state
as for WMD... i've heard better things about it, activity-wise, but i haven't heard of any reliable first-hand experiences
gameplay-wise, at this point you're comparing an apple to an orange, where both are fruit
If someone had to choose.
it's coming out soon. so gotta decide.
i suppose wait for a proper review.

As such, it's missing many great features that have been added by the two community programmers who have been working with the source code for the past 20+ years, including RubberWorm that brought us the popular "Kaos" scheme.
You do get some documentary and history as well as a playable copy of the Gameboy Advance version, which has the unique (albeit redundant) Chainsaw weapon.
So I would say if you want to focus on online multiplayer mostly then PC version is much better. If you would mostly play singleplayer then both are good and switch is a portable console so I would buy it on switch instead.
So this post kinda misses the point since OP owns these games on PC already, hence I'm taking it's more like a general advice post and to which I want to say...
Portable gaming PC handhelds have been a thing for nearly a decade now and the Steam Deck is a decently powerful and affordable system that can play every game in the series. So you get the best of both worlds, a portable handheld functionally acting like a console, with the freedoms of PC as well as the online playerbase in these games. Plus you only need to buy each game once to play on both your desktop PC as well as your handheld, with compatible (cloud) saves.
Like I said, that don't help the OP much since clearly they already purchased a Switch, but in general, I would much rather recommend any of the PC handhelds
...but brother sold the deck in question so I can't test anymore ;w;
By default witthout any modifications it should run smoothly on Steam Deck. There's no issues on my end
Or, since it was your brother's Steam Deck maybe he had some global settings enabled you weren't aware of such as the framerate limiter that caused jittering.
