Except maybe about the gamepad... no, you share a keyboard and mouse.
The default ganetype is called Intermediate, AKA Normal. To start a quick game together, choose the top right big button at the main menu, add two teams, and click start the game.
You can also host a game online - call it "2v2 noob normal" or something, add two teams (make them the same color), and you can play together against random people.
If you get bored of default stuff you can get some cool levels to play on at wmdb.org. Save those into your WA Installation\User\SavedLevels folder. Load them by right-clicking the map preview in WA, then choosing them off the drop-down list (middle bottom screen).

Note: to rotate girders (and change length) use the left/right arrow keys.
First - the host of the game should go to CMD and type "ipconfig". Once this is done, the host wants to note doen their IPv4 address. This should be something along the lines of 192.168.x.x and will be listed under "IPv4 Address".Now the host should go to the game, go into network play and create/host a LAN game. Give it a name and password and note these down. Give these details to the other people playing.
Player 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 will then hit the network play option and where it says to Directly connect to TCP/IP, put the IP address in the long strip to the right of it and then hit the Directly connect to TCP/IP button. You will get a connecting screen. You should then be prompted for the lobby password. Put the password in and you should be in a private LAN lobby together :).
For anyone interested - Hamatchi works too. Just copy the IPv4 Address of the host in the Hamatchi lobby by rightclicking them on Hamatchi and selecting "Copy IPv4".
If you are unable to connect on the LAN, you may need to set a static IP on the hosts machine and do Port-forwarding to the player hosting the lobby on the router.
The PC controls are great - the gold standard. I'd like to see people play a scheme with 1 second turns (like WA's 'Hysteria') on a console. They just take a bit of time to get accustomed to. If you don't like them use a program like Intes Keychange to change them.
I'd check out gameranger instead of doing Hamachi, you'll only have to show gameranger the path to the exe and your good to go for LAN over internet. Hamachi is so shaky these days and gameranger does a great job of configuring your network settings for you (also for other classic games where network metric settings etc is an issue). Direct IP works as well of course.
