If you are using a CD you will need to update it to the latest patch from https://worms2d.info/Latest
The game is very cheap during seasonal sales, and with the amount of user-created content and a dedicated community the best Worms experience there is to this day.
That said, I don't see why Remote Play Together wouldn't work. As of the latest update, released in July 2020, there should be no screen-sharing issues if you enable Windowed Mode in the game settings. My guess is that the storefront has not been updated to reflect the changes.
And the same with WWP.
For WWP I am unsure because it does not have windowed mode, and its fullscreen renderer may pose a problem.
Remote Play Together would be nice, but it doesn't look like it's supported (that I can tell) and is unlikely to be added.
The game is only about $3-4 when it goes on sale (like it is now), so I've just purchased it as a gift for friends in the past to get them a chance to try it. It also goes on sale on the legit key sites pretty frequently.
There's a dedicated server online but then you need to research how to interact with it. You can also host your own ones but it involves playing around with ports in your router and as such the dedicated one is the lesser headache.
You absolutely can. Why else would there still be an active community?
And then learn how to control it through commands from websites. Steam has such tips:

(or reference them in wormnet to play online!)
