Fear & Hunger 2: Termina

RO. Dec 19, 2022 @ 4:20am
Who is Rancid the Sergal
If you beat him while targeting his hands he will say that you are not worthy to be killed by him, but if you target torso only he will still say that you are not the one hes looking for

I just want to clarify something since I've seen this mentioned in few places. The Sergal Spear of the first game was a nod to the above mentioned youtuber yeah, but Rancid isn't supposed to be the said youtuber in game form or whatever I keep hearing.

Since that spear was tied to the lore of Fear & Hunger and its continent Vinland, I felt like I couldn't just sweep it under the rug, it would feel very disjointed if sergals were only mentioned once in these game and never explored further. So I thought I'd have one show up in Termina. The personality of the thing certainly isn't the same as the youtuber mentioned here. It's meant to be a character of its own. A cringe character? Yeah, fair enough, that I can see :D

Of course art is in the eye of the beholder and if rancid is viewed as just a reference, then there's not much I can do about it. But there's my 2 cents anyway on the intent behind the creature.

You can actually find him later in the forest next to the first bunker and kill him for good

He's a demon of cringe as far as i know

He's a furry OC of a youtuber who made challenge videos for the first Fear and Hunger.

I'm just thankfull that the author never referanced Sergal's "rawr" thing. That would beat any in-game scene in terms of vomit induction
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

True, but I assume people associate the Boss with the YouTuber because they both have Sergal in their name and Sergals are not a very well known fantasy race outside of the Furry community as far as I know. Anyway, I've never heard of them before Termina.

I agree with the above statement. I feel like what sargal does for this game is ironic. Being all fantastic fancy creature he brings way too much association with the real world

Yeah makes sense. I do understand why people think otherwise, just wanted to clarify this because it seems to be a pet peeve for some people. Ultimately it's my writing to blame if the character appears too cringe and not because the character is trying to mimic someone irl.

Yeah, from what I saw he isn't really popular except for the boss fight itself. But it's pretty mature of you to accept criticism and actively change things so they are more in line with the rest of the game's narrative and setting. I mean Fear and Hunger 1 was a lot different when it first came out and even before that, and it went to become what it is over time. So I am sure that you will do just fine regarding Termina. I'm sure that brain of yours has a lot more twisted and interesting ideas for us to witness.

(Here's hoping for a F&H3, though it would be nice to see it in a different engine maybe)

I don't know the youtuber in question and don't have any negative feelings towards them, so I'll be upfront that my criticism of the Sergal fight is it's just handled very awkwardly. The introduction of it with no build up on top its really out of place title it starts the fight with and it complaining about 'honor' when you disarm a limb doesn't sound like it fits the really gritty and dark vibe of F&H and almost like a parody. On top of it being a mandatory boss to get past the Church side it just turns out very jarring to me and others. Seeing it was a cameo to a content creator didn't really help the context of it and doesn't really do much for the game as a whole except either please the fans of said content creator or annoy people who dislike cameos like that. Speaking as someone who has no stake on this either way, I understand you want to show your appreciation to these people and would suggest either one or the both of the following options:

-Tone down/adjust the dialogue. The really overdrawn title Rancid gives at the start along with it complaining about targeting limbs feels way too on the nose and 'meta' for what's an obligatory boss fight right now. Play up the insane bloodthirsty beast feel. It's weird rant after the church fight talking about the doppelgangers and such also feels awkward considering how little the doppelgangers are acknowledged by the actual contestants otherwise.
-Make the fight solely an optional one solely for the forest section. Mechanically I'm not sure if you want a boss for the church side path as a damage/skill check for the player but I'm not sure it's necessary, but if you do a more thematically fitting boss might be more appropriate since Rancid is not too interesting beyond being a basic DPS check as mentioned. Keeping cameo fights like that optional too serves as a good balance for people who don't like that sort of reference while still showing appreciation to the person its made for.

Thank you for taking the time to read and respond to criticism though, I have good hopes for Termina's future with your engagement.

Why does Rancid have Neco in it's full name when introducing at the start of the fight, was this just a coincidence or something else?

Honestly I don't even dislike him. He's just weird. He acts like a rival character from a shonen anime or something. It's tonally a bit weird. I wouldn't say to remove him or that he sucks. He's just kind of odd in a game like this.

I would not have known the first game existed with Nic, he's an overall wholesome dude, Weird how people being happy not hurting anyone pisses people off so much, I had thought the character was an homage, but either way it was a nice oddball entity to encounter in that bleak world.
