I just want to clarify something since I've seen this mentioned in few places. The Sergal Spear of the first game was a nod to the above mentioned youtuber yeah, but Rancid isn't supposed to be the said youtuber in game form or whatever I keep hearing.
Since that spear was tied to the lore of Fear & Hunger and its continent Vinland, I felt like I couldn't just sweep it under the rug, it would feel very disjointed if sergals were only mentioned once in these game and never explored further. So I thought I'd have one show up in Termina. The personality of the thing certainly isn't the same as the youtuber mentioned here. It's meant to be a character of its own. A cringe character? Yeah, fair enough, that I can see :D
Of course art is in the eye of the beholder and if rancid is viewed as just a reference, then there's not much I can do about it. But there's my 2 cents anyway on the intent behind the creature.
True, but I assume people associate the Boss with the YouTuber because they both have Sergal in their name and Sergals are not a very well known fantasy race outside of the Furry community as far as I know. Anyway, I've never heard of them before Termina.
Yeah makes sense. I do understand why people think otherwise, just wanted to clarify this because it seems to be a pet peeve for some people. Ultimately it's my writing to blame if the character appears too cringe and not because the character is trying to mimic someone irl.
(Here's hoping for a F&H3, though it would be nice to see it in a different engine maybe)
-Tone down/adjust the dialogue. The really overdrawn title Rancid gives at the start along with it complaining about targeting limbs feels way too on the nose and 'meta' for what's an obligatory boss fight right now. Play up the insane bloodthirsty beast feel. It's weird rant after the church fight talking about the doppelgangers and such also feels awkward considering how little the doppelgangers are acknowledged by the actual contestants otherwise.
-Make the fight solely an optional one solely for the forest section. Mechanically I'm not sure if you want a boss for the church side path as a damage/skill check for the player but I'm not sure it's necessary, but if you do a more thematically fitting boss might be more appropriate since Rancid is not too interesting beyond being a basic DPS check as mentioned. Keeping cameo fights like that optional too serves as a good balance for people who don't like that sort of reference while still showing appreciation to the person its made for.
Thank you for taking the time to read and respond to criticism though, I have good hopes for Termina's future with your engagement.
Why does Rancid have Neco in it's full name when introducing at the start of the fight, was this just a coincidence or something else?
Honestly I don't even dislike him. He's just weird. He acts like a rival character from a shonen anime or something. It's tonally a bit weird. I wouldn't say to remove him or that he sucks. He's just kind of odd in a game like this.
