Why does this game have such a large Russian fanbase?

Bleak difficult survival game = reminiscent of s.t.a.l.k.e.r. (the trope tends to be popular there as well), also many russian quasi-tumblerinas like the gross/scary + cute things the games have going for them.

Have you also considered that the game is simply popular and russians have access to the internet.

The first game was a cult hit in russia before it got attention anywhere else iirc.

It's because the moon-faced villagers look like your average handsome slav having a fun night.
That sweet instant-set-up bear-trap trick? Taught by their sweet babushkas.

My question was about the amount of Russian players this game has, seemingly more than other indie games with a similar amount of reviews. I was curious because of the amount of Russian language content in the artwork tab for this game.

The old town of Prehevil is probably a familiar sight to most Russian villagers.

All these joke answers are good but F&H1 was popular particularly with Russians (to the point that until recently, the only video guides for that one were Russian ones), whereas the series was pretty obscure outside of it until Termina came out. Russians seem to like grim and gritty stories so that's probably part of it.

this game is good. just it is.
plus in ru youtube pretty more content with this game

Russian and Finnish people seem to particularly enjoy dark and gritty stuff,
I could be wrong but I think Warhammer 40k is pretty popular in Russia because its grimdark, and the most popular Russian game I knew about was Pathologic (which is VERY bleak).

Because of the "Pekar" Youtube videos
In Russia, they love hard and painful trials. Because they are still better and more pleasant than ordinary life in this country. I'm from Russia myself, so I know what I'm talking about.

Why? I guess its something like forklift simulator for germans - you feel like home there xD Well jokes aside, first of all Prehevil obviosly is Czech, which means slav, ands slavs love slavs. Aslo game is ♂deep dark fantasy♂, we love this too

As a Russian, I can note that "Fear&Hunger 1 and 2" quite unexpectedly are touching quite deep Russian archetypes. These games very well convey uncertainty, sadistic and masochistic aspects of life. We often have to face and overwhelm painful and unpredictable situations (and in case of failure we often "like" to suffer and feel the guilt, and sometimes the way of self-punishing is to keep fulfilling "the plan" without a leg or an eye (some modus of classic Russian style).

The feeling of danger from not only mystic creatures but from ordinary villagers and routine things, grim-wettish-foggish-apocalyptic and depressive setting (close by vibe to the Russian climate and post-soviet depression in its exaggerated manifestation) provoke nostalgia and childhood memories (along with pixel graphics). Also, the game's visual style and monsters look like a casual, unprocessed art from your schoolmate's notebook made during the boring lesson. It's a great game!

P.S. These games in some way remind me such movies as "Peculiarities of the National Fishing" (1998), "Cargo 200" (2007), and "The Green Elephant" (1999)
Thank you for the detailed response.
