Is the game actually timed?

So I see that there is the concept of the three day cycle but how does time actually move forward in the game?

You can save the game by sleeping or using rare items. Every time you sleep time moves forward.

Is the time set until you sleep or does it progress naturally?

The time is completely set until you sleep, you could idle in the same place for hours and it would still be day 1 morning.

Good to know, I made it pretty far but I have missed all recruitment opportunities and I have too little health to really get anywhere after opening the gate, so I will restart and use this to my benefit

Some fail states can result in it getting later (aka it being dusk/maybe night but still the same day)

One fail state that is disastrous is getting caught murdering somebody by a contestant who restrains you, which sends you all the way to the end day 3 if it happens. You have to be pretty dense if you let this happen most of the time, although I believe Marcoh will always restrain you even if he's a current party member.

What about being caught by the laughing guy and send to bunker 5? He is so fast I can barely evade him and he is way too powerful to deal with

I don't think that one does, but I've only ever had it happen once and I just restarted after so I'm not sure.

And if you remove his arm something funny happens but aint going to spoil that.
You kinda need some items and resources to kill him in a timely manner, after all, this plays more akin to a survival horror game where you should use your throwables/items whenever you see fit, I recommend setting him on fire with a gas canister or fire lantern and guard while he burns into a crisp.

Happened on my first playthrough and noticed he fully healed me, even the heroin adiction on levi at literal no cost. Even tried it on S/M and you still are on the same day so no time passes I think.
