Resident Evil 5
Question regarding CD Key.
So I redeemed my retail GFWL CD Key on Steam and when I was downloading RE5, I noticed that there was a link to a CD Key that is different from mine for the game to use. Is it possible for me to use that CD Key that I didnt use, on a different account and redeem it on that account?

No. They don't deem the digital keys as valid, because of this, users who have bought the digital games for windows live version from the microsoft storefront will not be able to take advantage of the steamworks version or the steam servers for cooperative play.

I wasn't talking about the digital GFWL Marketplace version of RE5. I bought a physical copy of the game and I redeemed the code that was on the back of the manual on Steam. When I was downloading the game, there was a link at the right of my screen containing a different CD Key and I asked if I could in theory, redeem that code on a different account. I never bought it from Microsoft's website.

because it was steam generated, it counts as a games for windows live digital key, you may not have been able to redeem it on the games for windows live marketplace, but you were able to activate the game to your GFWL profile so you could play online. It's digital, so it won't work with activation.

Source? If true, then I'm in trouble.
Navster, that second key in your case should allow you to play the GFWL version if you prefer.

If you check the official posts stickied on the forums here, that's the thing some people probably wanted, and Capcom made sure to provide that for existing GFWL keys. So you are supposed to get a new Steam key and then a GFWL key.

As to whether is can be abused or not, I'd be wary of counting on it. My guess is that the old GFWL key has the saves you need to convert into the Steam version. The new GFWL key is the only way to use GFWL version after the conversion. The old GFWL key after saved game conversion is probably dead. That also saves them from hackers down the road.

More specifically

Q: If I already have the GFWL version of the game, can I get the Steamworks version?

A: If you purchased a retail package GFWL version, you can use the GFWL activation code and redeem it on Steam to get a free copy of the full Steamworks-enabled version. Those who have already purchased the game on Steam or through other online distributors selling Steam keys will automatically be upgraded to the full Steamworks edition.

If you purchased a digital copy directly from the Microsoft GFWL marketplace, you can continue to enjoy RE5 on GFWL. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate a Steamworks transfer for these folks as there is no authentication option available. However, all of our applicable GFWL titles continue to support the features and will function normally. To continue playing on GFWL, you must maintain a separate installation using the GFWL activation key.
