RE5 Mercenaries is stupid.
Updated: Who rezzed this post? I don't feel the same way anymore. I've grown to appreciate RE5's mercenaries more than RE6's which is just waiting, waiting, and more waiting. While I never got "good" at it, I appreciate that it's much faster paced and is more demanding of you.

I've played RE6's Mercenaries and No Mercy extensively. It's a lot of fun. Sometimes it's frustrating especially when you're pinned down by dogs and bloodshots. But the mechanics more than make up for it. It's the best and most fun in the series.

But then I went back and tried RE5's Mercenaries since I never got into it, and it really highlights the flaws in the mechanics. The mechanics made for story campaign aren't well suited for Mercenaries.

CONS

- The lack of strafing and the slow run makes the game feel clunky.
- Enemies literally materialize behind you. They grab you constantly.
- Sometimes even when you pop their heads they're still in attacking animation.
- They have RIDICULOUS tracking on their attacks. They'll spin 360 degrees to hit you. This doesn't happen in RE6. I thought Dark Souls 2 was bad, but this is just as terrible. Combine this with the slow run, and you're hit constantly when you're trying to run around them to collect timers.
- When the enemies die their bodies still have collision and don't de-materialize right away. It's extremely frustrating when you're trying to run past them to re-position yourself, but you're stuck for two seconds as their bodies decompose.
- I prefer aiming with mouse, but trying to manage inventory with keyboard is clunky. At least with a controller I can memorize the directional movements to re-arrange items or discard them.
- You CANNOT re-bind the Z key. What the hell? It's the only key that can't be changed, and it's the MOST important key in Mercenaries because you're reloading via inventory. I literally had to re-bind my inventory to shift key to make it easier.
- If you kill multiple enemies with melee you get only ONE time bonus. In RE6, if you kill four the time bonuses stack x4 for +20 seconds. They don't stack here.
- As you get closer to the maximum kill count enemies suddenly stop appearing so you lose your combo easily.
- The combo gap is way, way too small. It's 10 seconds, and it's simply not enough. I swear if it were 13, 12, or even 11 seconds it would make all the difference.
- Most of the character loadouts aren't made for melee kills. Only Midnight/STARS Wesker allows for better melee kills. It's a headshot with your pistol, and one melee for that +5 time bonus.
- The Mines has the Reaper which absolutely destroys your combo. Not to mention its absurd one-shot kill. God help you if you're lagging because it's impossible to hit his yellow bulbs, and it'll teleport in front of you for a grab. Combine the Reaper with the slow movement, enemies magically appearing behind you, and the 10 second combo gap; you have yourself a really frustrating game.
- The chicken. Who thought it was a good idea to make the chicken apart of the enemy count? I cannot remember how many times I was at x149 kills only to lose it to the chicken.

But there are enough things I like about it so I keep going back to get better.

PROS

- I like that you have to manually reload via inventory. It's awkward at first, but it's addicting to be quick about it.
- The matchmaking is better here. I simply cannot find a game most of the time in RE6. Either no one is playing or Capcom messed up the matchmaking. In RE5, I can usually find one or two open lobbies for duo Mercenaries.

Overall, I do enjoy how challenging it is, but it's not challenging in a GOOD way. It's frustrating, but I like it too much to stop.

1.The fact you could run and shoot is a main reason RE6 was bad. Stopping to aim should be a decision.

2.youre just bad at watching your 6.

3. Yes the parasite doesnt die the second there head is gone. Its located in there chest.

4.Youre exagerating on that one badly.

5.Yes this is called inertia, if I swing a sword at you and you shoot me in the head killing me, the sword is going to keep moving.

6. Git gud

7. not being able to rebind z is kinda stupid

8.In RE4 you didnt get a bonus at all for melee, in RE5 which came out before RE6 if you hadnt noticed, was them trying it out.

9.Yea that kinda does suck

10.People seem to do just fine with 10 second gaps, just cause you cant doesnt mean its an issue.

11.Then only play them, or dont only do melee

12. then dont play the mines

13. Chicken is lord

I don't hate RE5 mercenaries, but I do agree that it was much more fun in RE6. It was the only great thing in RE6.

re5's mercenaries is too difficult for me:bbtduckshark:

If you're a PC guy, you should know there are ways to rebind keys with 3rd party portable software.

And yet there's the one argument you have obviously missed.

Resident Evil 5 came out BEFORE Resident Evil 6. Shocking, I know. So there's the obvious explaination that they IMPROVED everything for RE6. Ever heard the saying "Set your expectations accordingly"? Because you really should.

You mean...RE6...is fun?

That's not how i remember it.

With a friend on a stable connection, yes. Especially when you turn the bloody quick time events off.

Well... If mercenaries was able to think, they'd say the same about you.
Every game has rules and your part is adjust to them (like it or not).

Wow, way to contribute absolutely nothing. It's obvious RE5 is an older game with older mechanics. OP only highlighted the changes between RE5 and RE6. Do you wanna say any other obvious thing likes what color the sky is, too?

Did you miss the part where OP said he still liked Mercenaries? Way to show you didn't even read the post. Here, I'll show it for you.

This will come as a shock but did you know you can enjoy something AND still be critical of it? Revolutionary, I know.

You're giving people's intelligence entirely too much credit. If retail has taught me anything, it's that a person's ability to miss the obvious is legendary.

I can't believe so many complained about the QTEs they literally patched it. But, yeah, RE6 is an amazing game if you play the campaign WITH a friend. Otherwise, it's really mediocre. I feel sorry for anyone who played the RE6 campaign solo.

Because they're QTEs. And I died more than enough times when the game would tell me to hit X + A, I hit them multiple times, and it just ignores the input and kills me anyways. The QTEs in RE6 were extremely glitchy at release and I refuse to do them again.

Instead of... metaphorically re-bind it?

All of those things you mentioned become much less of a con when you get better at the game. And for the record multi kill melee attacks do stack.

RE5 is not a game that your going to pick up and get great scores on your first day. You have to learn the enemy patterns, get your aiming on point, learn to set up melee in groups(all 4 characters can do this), figure out what places to fight work best for you, learn to always move forward before doing anything and while doing anything, and master the item dodge. If you fight in the same area for a while there will be items that you can use to dodge their 360 swings and grabs.

I didn't like RE6 at all though. With RE5 you determine the speed of killing, in RE6 you just gotta wait on countering everything, couldn't stand it. The boss holding was not appealing at all to me either. Just made the game more annoying. And enemies can stun lock you in RE6. And it only has 3 maps unless you buy the DLC. LoL
URMarty Mar 18, 2015 @ 4:02pm
Re6 you must wait to counter, looks stupid as ♥♥♥♥. But it's fun playing just to be playing it.
Hollapeno Mar 18, 2015 @ 5:22pm
RE5 Mercs is very intense and hard. RE6 Mercs is simply more fast paced. I love both of them, especially with a good partner. :)
