Firstly, suprise suprise, Microsoft is a joke, and if it wasn't already known, GFWL is a complete shambles, still, even after its dead...
Ok so if you have the same problem as me, it could be one of two things (or both). Firstly, if you have two step authentication on your hotmail/outlook/windows live id, then disable that.
Secondly, your password must be 8-15 characters and contain ONLY letters and numbers. Yes really, in order to log into GFWL you have to have a less secure password as the alogorithm for passwords is not uniform throughout windows live id services, even though you have one ID for all... excellent work there microsoft!
After that i could log in, only to then get an error because i needed to download a GFWL update, and it wouldn't connect. Oh what fun this is...
Right, well in order to connect to GFWL you need to ensure your MTU settings are at 1492. Both for your modem/router and your software settings. This allows you to connect and download packets of data. Mine was at 1500 standard for cable connection. Anyway after all that i got it all working.
Hope this helps anyone who has the same issues.
