As for leveling the base stats, you can choose to increase either MA or AV by one on a roll of 10, AG by one on a roll of 11 and ST by one on a roll of 12, instead of choosing a skill for that level.
There are 5 skill sets; Mutation, Strength, General, Agility & Passing.
For each class/race combination, each of these skill sets will be either :
- completely inaccessible (marked 'no', mutations are like this for most class/races)
- always accessible (marked 'normal'),
- only accessible when you roll a double. (marked 'double')
Given that rolling a double is a 1 in 6 chance, it's usually* advisable to take advantage of the additional skill sets given to you when you have the opportunity.
*(but not always)
Going from ST3 to ST4 is pretty huge, since you'll now get 2-dice blocks against average ST. Going from 4 to 5 is still useful but not as much of a jump...there's fewer ST4s and ST5s around on the pitch, and you still 'only' get 2dbs against ST3. ST5 to ST6 can be worth it since it'll give you a good chance for 3dbs, but if you roll a 12 on a Big Guy and don't take Block you deserve all the ridicule that is going to be heaped upon you.
Likewise, AG3 to AG4 is pretty big. AG1 to AG2...isn't. Your player still isn't any good at ballhandling and could have used that skillup to become better at something they're actually designed for.
The stat-or-skill question gets even trickier with AV and MA. AV8 to AV9 isn't anywhere near as big a change as AV7 to AV8. MA5 to MA6 means you still can't outrun average MA, but MA6 to MA7 actually gives you a pretty big tactical advantage. MA7 to MA8 doesn't do much, but MA10 and above can mean one-turn touchdown potential (10 squares of regular movement plus 3 from Sprint = the 13 you need to go from the LoS to the endzone in one run).
On the lower end of the speed scale, MA2 to MA3 means no longer having to roll to stand up. MA3 to MA4...doesn't do much, really.
So you see...it's never as easy as 'always take the stat-up' or 'always take the doubles skill'.
Also thanks much to everyone who has posted here because I honestly searched for a couple of hours last night and the answer about leveling base stats wasn't even on BBTactics.com.
If you roll a 10, 11 or 12 additional button(s) will appear on the dice roll screen giving you the option of increasing your MA, AV, AG or STR.
Basically, if your roll gives you the option of increasing an attribute it'll be obvious. (one of the very few things in Cyanide's user interface that *is* obvious)
In your Chaos Edition game directory, you should be able to find a .PDF of the rules linked to in post#5.
