To be fair, pretty much everything except a Cricket can tank an IRM-S1 to some extent since they have one of the smallest warheads known to man. Taking two Scythes is quite impressive, but the Tarantula is definitely a beast. It's big enough and chunky enough that you can survive the initial hit, and all four engines are linked so you don't have to worry about asymmetric thrust when an engine is lost.

they definitely soak up missiles, I've found the most efficient way to deal with them is a gun pass. Especially with the ifrit, that 27mm is vicious and the things are so unwieldy they are basically just a big target.

It is still kinda crazy how much damage the Tarantula can soak up. But i guess that is needed considering it's role as a gunship/heavy lift vehicle.

Tarantula can tank a direct hit, and if lucky maybe 2. It may seems (if its the enemy) that it happily tanks it like nothing, but in reality most of times is just slowly (but inevitably) dying.

Guns will ususally do it as long it's not the Cricket's 12.7 MGs. It's also a pretty hard target to miss.
Alternatively, you can commit honorable seppuku and crash into the thing.

Can the fifty cals do ANYTHING without needing a full three seconds on target or incredible luck in hitting just right?

Anyway, in my experience a single missile is enough to down one, if with a delay, though I never use the small missiles...

... Also I managed to damage one, which went down after a minute, and its wreck "rescued" its own crew. W h a t.

Frankly I’ve found them quite vulnerable. If they lose more than one engine it’s basically a death sentence due to asymmetric thrust. One other thing worth noting is that unlike basically every other aircraft, the tarantula is 90% empty space since its cargo. If your missile or bullets don’t hit something important like an engine or cockpit it likely won’t do much and will just punch straight through

Gun pass? Not really,I once shot out two of its propellers with an ifrit, and it was able to make an emergency landing and then release two AA trucks from its belly，and they shoot me down, that was crazy

If you know that they are slow enough, maybe less than 150kts of airspeed, you can fire any AGM or a burst of lynchpins at them either from head on or behind and it very often contacts since they are so fat and huge and humongous. AGM's tend to take them out in a single hit. I hate tarantulas so much it's unreal.

Throw an AGM-68 at the Tarantula and watch it split like a puzzle if it is not flying too fast.

What's fun is when you kill a Tarantula with guns and the AFV6 AAA it was carrying survives the crash and starts launching missiles at you
