1) Locate your airfield. Use the target selector to choose two targets near the runway so you can see your alignment with the runway on the screen as you approach.
2) Start to reduce airspeed and altitude on the way in. Exact altitude isn't really important but you need to watch your speed - try to bring it down to about 300 (you can go lower but the game is very forgiving) and set the throttle low. The "right" amount varies from plane to plane but 25% is usually safe in careful flight.
3) Make sure you've cleared any obstacles like hills and buildings and approach a point you want to begin to turn. This should be early and gentle since you're at a low airspeed so don't roll 90 degrees, just coast around.
4) When the runway looks almost vertical begin to slowly level out and make it look vertical ahead of you. Now you're on a good approach so lower your landing gear.
5) You don't want to touch down at too steep of an angle or high speed. Keep the HUD's velocity vector indicator (a circle with lines on the sides and top) around 5-8 degrees and on the point you want to touch down at. Lower your throttle to zero when you feel safe doing so. Throttle response is fast so you can always power back up 30% if you need a little extra lift.
6) Glide in using the velocity vector indicator to predict where your plane will go. Flaring isn't necessary for any of the planes so just glide all the way to touchdown then apply the wheel brakes. Under 100 speed you'll be able to stop quite quickly so if you landed early don't be afraid to coast down to the rearm truck at quite a high speed. Try not to use your engine until it's time to take off.
7) Get those sweet successful sortie points.
