The circle represents probability of a hit. Not range alone.
Just yesterday I was aiming my rockets on a corvette and the circle was only at around 80% when I passed the 5 km distance to target mark. I waited few more seconds for circle to fill to 100% and fired.
i always random swap between missiles and does not know if they are used against plane or ground or both
It's not even that, many A2G weapons will consistently hit moving targets from ranges at which the circle doesn't even show up, and the way the circle changes with heading is downright bizarre (PAB-80s show a fuller circle if you point the nose directly at the target, but fly further if you stay level or loft them)
TL DR the circle is at best a very unreliable indicator
Best example Ive found is that you can bump lynchpins range by about 1-1.5km if your really hauling ass when you fire them off
