I'm happy you managed to fix the game! I'm currently experiencing the same issue as you, but installing the Physx drivers from the link above and changing the compatibility mode does not solve the issue.
Did you perhaps do anything else to get it working?

1) get the PhysX Legacy drivers
2) Set compatibility mode to Windows XP Service Pack 3
Then as I tried to start the game, it said "couldn't find OpenAL32.dll"
3) Get a copy of OpenAL32.dll from another game or the internet (careful! high virus risk there!) and copy it into the Bionic Commando folder
I got mine from the mod RealRTCW for Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
