The only thing that worries me about V:S clones becoming so rabidly prevalent, is that in one case a top-down shooter I was looking forward to, the devs ended up apparently delaying that so they could churn out a V:S clone/spinoff faster I guess.
I mean, I've seen so many genres get rapidly popular in 30 years of PC gaming, but I don't remember a time when a rabidly growing genre resulted in a a game getting spunoff in that form, before the source game material even got released. :D
Maybe you missed 2018 then when battleroyales killed Paragon, Battlerite, and who knows what else.
