And even if you hate having to build thing after thing after thing, all you really need is to build one machine that does what you need per goal, and let the game run itself in the background (I did that for Factorio, played it like an idle game for a while.)
Also, you can toss space trains into a black hole. What else does one need? :D
Your goal is to complete the required shape by any means within the tools you have unlocked, eventually you will get to build a fully automatic system.
In Shapes 1 i build a auto shape building machine that produced enough shapes to level up by itself every couple of minutes, not the fastest but after reaching level 1050, i kinda felt it was done.
Shapes 2 handles alot of the complaints from Shapes 1, like RGB colour mixing can now be CMY colour mixing like real printers do to mix colours, where RGB is for light ;)
I bought this only today and already have almost 6 hours play on it, no complaints at all and progress is as fast as you want to push yourself.
