Generally speaking, there are at least three ways of creating free pins that are not on the top level:
1. If you already have 5-layer shape, stack a pinned shape on top of it. The pins above the gaps will fall down, and the rest will be destroyed.
2. Put the free pins on top of some intermediate shape that includes extra crystals, which can then be broken, so that the pins drop to the lower levels.
3. Use one of the above methods to create free pins on an empty plate, and use them just like any other shape piece.
