Edit: Oh, about blueprints. You can basically save things you build to a file, then delete it, and load copies any time you like, so you won't have to worry about saving your machines all over the place. Also, blueprints are saved as files on your hard drive, meaning you can go to the blueprint folder, then share your blueprints with other people.
Shapez 2 is a better game because it lets the player choose, and yet requires the same kind of puzzle-like mechanics to create efficient production lines.
Edit: In either case, copy-paste cost can be very cosmetic, as it's extremely easy to build a farm for blueprint points very early into the game, and I always end up with millions of blueprint points by the time I'm delivering the final milestone shape.
It will show you in the milestone and task list what's coming in a particular chain of tasks, and it's usually worth planning ahead a bit and keeping/extending your machinery making shapes for that particular line of tasks, since they tend to incrementally build on previous steps. Other than that, I have no qualms about wiping out huge swathes of machinery if it's in the way, and I don't have a (near) immediate use for it.
