1. zombies
2. random loot
You walk from one section/area to the next.... retreat and go back and the loots back and most of the time so are the zeds you just slaughtered. The zeds are in the same place....
Gah.... some randomness would have made the game that much better.
1. Predictable and poorly-placed re-spawning of enemies, loot, and players upon death struck me as some of the weakest and most "gamey" aspects of the game.
2. Zombie-thrown weapons. Because these are "flukes", they're not something one can prepare for like special zombies, and one hit kills early on.
3. Rushed intro to play mechanics. Many players don't get the basics of rage/fury, fast travel, flashlights, and weapon strengths until many hours in.
4. NPC interaction. You don't have meaningful dialogues or really connect.
5. Story arc. Nothing so surprising or engaging, but (4) plays a large part in this, as without a connection to one's companions its hard to be engaged in their fate.
Awesome:
1. Variety of zombies
2. Variety of weapons, upgrades, and modifications
3. Skill tree options
4. Free exploration and many side quests
5. Group stands!
Screamers are mostly dangerous in a supporting role. They don't pose much threat if you make them a targeting priority. As soon as they're in scream-range, get in close with a fire- or shock-based weapon. Alternatively, plink them from afar with guns or explosives.
Use flares :P
1. The island is very south pacific, the population is not. The original game NPCs really did look and sound like someone from Deep Silver went to Papua New Guinea and got a feel for the people and dialects, The population of Palanai just looks and sounds like a mini-UN
2. No variety in vehicles, just some Toyota Hiluxes and a generic boat, thats it.
3. Respawning food, medkits, ammo, almost everywhere.
4. Merchants everywhere, might as well be called Dead Walmart,Tescos,Aldi,Soriana,Auchan or whatever mega grocery store you have in your country-Riptide
5. Dead Zones, don't feel like fighting a boss? you don't have to, yawwwwn
6. Oh noes, the Royal Australian Navy ship ran aground, maybe we should go back to the ship, and retrieve as many assault rifles, ammo, and suplies as we can? Nah, too convenient.
7. Zombies=bad, humans=good. There are mostly no sinister or imoral human characters, with the exception of Marcos Villa or Serpo, even then, you do not get to see any of the lawlesness or human depravity that you saw in Moresby and in the jungles of Banoi. Remember the tied up corpse with the video camera at the resort? Remember what happened to poor Jin at the hands of the evil mokes (yes, I use the term mokes, for I learned that from Mowen, a memorable character from Dead Island, which Riptide had none of) at the police station? how could one forget such disturbing things! no such nightmare fodder in Riptide, just plenty of sunshine, till it rains, and irrelevant zombies.
8. Drugs are bad, m'kay. Let's not give this guy his drugs, lets give him glucose instead, yaaaawn.
9. Mutated scientists, look evil, sound very evil, die with one single hit, meanwhile screaming grandma takes all your weapons to put down.
10. Skinny corpses on the ground=really dead, not skinny corpses=zombies pretending to be dead.
11. Not one vehicle to be found in Henderson, considering the city was supposed to have been accessible in happier times by car ferry, and by a huge elevated highway.
12. Useless loot. Hey, I found insulin, I also found water purification tablets, I found expensive wine, anyone need these? can I make a cool weapon with these? Nope.
13. You can play as John Morgan, a local Palanaian/Australian who states he has lived in Palanai all his life, yet he has to consult with Harlow, an Israeli tourist/relief worker, on how to get to Henderson, where he and his family lived!
14. You find the diary of John Morgan, which is a compelling story of survival ,yet the playable Morgan makes no mention of any of the story points from his diary, what happened to the child he saved? what happened to the fellow soldier who became a zombie and he could not kill? If John had been trough the Japanese tunnels, why could he not just tell the other survivors, instead of having to go trough the whole ordeal of Marcos Villa?
15. Harpoon gun, mostly useless, by the time you get it, you already may have either a gun, or an assorment of far more powerful axes to toss at the undead.
16. Nail gun, see Harpoon gun, mostly useless, expensive ammunition, ammunition is too easily lost.
17. Stun gun, by the time you get an effective version of it, you alreay have super upgraded axes and possibly a sniper rifle, one shot kill weapons, no need to stun anyone.
18. Flare gun. mostly innefective, expensive ammo, horribly slow reload, possibly of use only in the tunnels, after that, get rid of this dead weight quick.
19. We need to find a boat to find out the road to Henderson is inaccesible, when you can easily drive to the road block.
20. Boats=zombie magnets, you stand a better chance just wading trough the inland lagoon, its only waist deep anyway.
21. Useless weapon upgrades for NPC's. If you play single player, and you bother upgrading the survivors weapons by doing their missions, even with these upgraded weapons, you will have to constantly bail them out from being chewed to death during team battles.
22.Military base at Henderson, much hyped, yet it is basically a very small area with no military vehicles to use, no machine gun emplacement, no artillery, no weapons cache''s , zombified military only carry low level pistols, pistols! nothing you would expect at a military installation, not even a proper boss.
23. ultra predictable enemy spawns, ok here I will find a guy sitting that is not really dead, and screaming grandma will be over here, this house will look like this inside, yawwn, no variety.
24. The final battle, even with the assortment of ultra mega effective weapons you will have at this point, you cannot win the battle except by having to use the plot device, really, a single bullet from my SVD Dragunov which I had at this point would have put down this boss, one shot.
25.Menus, they seem to have gotten worse, specially the blueprint menus, no indication of mod improvement unless you have the required weapon to mod.
26. You like chainsaws? you will hate them in riptide, you basically only find one, and it wears out very fast, better stick to tossing upgraded axes.
27. Repeating dialogue, we used to buy icecream for jimmy here, we used to buy ice cream for jimmy here, please find my friends, please find my friends, whenever entering certain areas or approaching certain NPCs.
28. good luck finding stingray tails or algae, in an island, an island!
29. molotovs- liquor everywhere, rags...good luck finding them, and if you do manage to find the blueprint for molotovs, harsh language is more effective against the undead.
30. No need for improvised weapons. no need to use oars, sticks, hat racks, or shovels when there are knives, katanas, and axes almost everywhere.
31. work benches everywhere, no need to mind the wear and tear on your weapons, you can repair them almost anywhere, not an issue if you are tossing weapons.
32. Xian is still a character for players who are masochists and like staring at nice shoes.
What I did like:
1. weapons are no longer made out of butter. knives and such smaller weapons will wear out as in the original, but it will take a much more reasonable amount of use for them to do so.
2. Guns are much more effective, specially revolvers, shotguns, and the uber awsome sniper rifles. Regular pistols and assault rifles are still a bit on the lame side.
3. Import character stats from the original game, one more reason to play the far superior original once again.
So, in summary, should you play Riptide? yes, it is tons of fun to constantly toss axes at everything that moves, should you pay full price? absolutely not! wait till its on sale, and only, if like myself, you loved the original Dead Island.
I know my boyfriend's biggest pet peeve is the ones with throwing knives one shotting him. I've never been hit by one, but it's always funny hearing him get pissed every time.
Tell your boyfriend I know how he feels. :(
I hate the zombies throwing knives, because there is no chance to do something aginst it and all those floaters, whitch grab everybody out of the boat, even you drive with fullspeed, it's realy anoying in coop mode to use boats.
There could be more variations of buildings, deadzones, etc. it looks allways the same. 2-3 different ons each type is too less.
I still don't know, what I can use water/wine/champagne for.
It's also anoying, that there is still no fix for the missing shotgun ammo blueprint.
And last but not least, I never found a legendary weapon in game till now(exept a lousy master chief) and I played it trough several times(incl.side-quests), with all chars.
Irrelevant to the discussion?
Things that are awesome:
+ CHAINSAW !!!
+ More firearms/bombs/weapons
+ Better graphics compared to dead island
+ Quest markers point to areas that have to be searched, a similar system should be in every open world game.
+ Weapons are more durable
+ Weapon type skill levels
