"Maih waif iz dehd."
"My wife is dead." ~ Carter, Jungle camp house, best voice acted line in years.
Alright, joking about the instances of hilariously so-bad-it's-good voice acting aside, I just remembered that there is something in Riptide that talks about all of the people you helped on the first island (Banoi), and that could be considered pretty major.
One the one hand I want to suggest playing DI first and then Riptide because there are a lot of improvements that are easy to miss when playing Riptide, but when you play DI after having played Riptide they are noticable and you sure do miss them. (What I'm saying DI could feel worse knowing how things changed in Riptide).
On the other hand I'd like to suggest going with Riptide. It's new and has some minor improvements and the level design feels much "cleaner". Burnout is another issue, after playing thru DI you may not really wish to play Riptide because a lot stays the same.
The story is full of cheese in both games (something I find fitting the genre), so you are not missing out on much.
