story progression? DI1 and riptide?
i never played the first one but got it free, i finished the ryder story just for fun and now i'm askin anyone who played the whole story in the first one. should i play through the main story in the first dead island before riptide?
story wise does it matter? or can i just jump in riptide and not worry about the story and come back to the first one later?
i wana play both but i'm tempted to jump in riptide cause its newer. and i'm more curious about it ruining my story if i don't play dead island before riptide.

I guess you should play the original Dead Island before launching Riptide. The plot isn't a great one, but it's connected with the events from Banoi, so it's good to know it. And, still, Dead Island is much fun - if you got someone to play with, of course.

Well, I'm not too far into Riptide's story, and so far there's not really anything too important that I can think of that you'd have to had played through the first story for, but there is a good bit of things that will 'click', if that makes sense. However, I still recommend playing through the first one. This is probably the most accurate case of a game with direct continuity. The intro cinematics in Riptide recap all the events of the first game fairly well, but it will all definitely mean more if you experienced exactly what they went through. Especially... well, I don't want to say too much, but it's pretty "Keep that hair short." The conclusion to that part of the story may have already been spoiled in the Ryder White campaign which was meant to be played after the main story -- partially because most of it ties in to events affecting the main team, partially because it's an awful representation of Dead Island gameplay; I mean, seriously, it's a hallway campaign that was basically purely added in for story. There's a reason they stopped selling the DLC.

ahh ok ty, now i believe there are like side missions and a main mission if i'm not mistaken? would it be unwise to say skip all the side missions and do only the main missions jsut to get the story and come abck later and mess around with side missions? or should i just do it all then play riptide?

If you just want the original Dead Island story, don't bother with the side missions. However, you may find that you still need to do some side quests in order to level up enough. Also, some side quests you can activate and then as you carry out story quests you may stumble upon the objectives for the side quests at the same time.

If you skip side quests, you'll never understand the true pain and struggle of all those involved.

"Maih waif iz dehd."
"My wife is dead." ~ Carter, Jungle camp house, best voice acted line in years.

Alright, joking about the instances of hilariously so-bad-it's-good voice acting aside, I just remembered that there is something in Riptide that talks about all of the people you helped on the first island (Banoi), and that could be considered pretty major.

There really isn't any story other than survivors trying to escape an island. Personally, I would suggest just playing straight into Riptide so you don't get game burnout since the mechancis are the same between the two games. Riptide is much better. It's shorter, but the two major zones in the game are much better than the second half of the original game which dragged.

Just for funsies, I can't find good footage of Carter and his amazing voice acting (which I wanted to link in case you missed him, he's a good bit off to the side in a bit of a hub area), but I totally forgot about a different nearby NPC with another amazing line. This could potentially be considered area/side-quest/NPC spoilers, I guess, but it's hilarious; don't click to watch this video if you'd rather wait through most of the campaign to see it for yourself: "Jesus, you look like ♥♥♥♥."

Riptide is a stand alone game, you dont need the 1st dead lsland to play, but u need to find the skulls to have some fun in the 1st Dead lsland. just alittle upset on some of the bugs wasn't fix from the 1st one but all up l loved the game...(no skulls in riptide that l know of just yet...hope there is better mod :) )...just finished the game now going back and do / try and do all side mission.......so there is a story to cross over like how they start off on the ship...but there is all so another story from the 1st one you might want to play (Ryder White's campaign) what is a DLC ...[This DLC offers a unique new perspective into the incidents in the main story of Dead Island: This time the player will get the chance to play as Ryder White, the antagonist of the main game; learn more about his motivations and why, from his point of view, he did what he had to do. This fresh take on the Dead Island story shows Ryder White both as a military man and a loving husband. The DLC stars Ryder White as a newly playable character and offers a single player campaign with several hours of story content with twists and turns that will shed new light on the game’s happenings. Two blueprints and weapons will further expand the already impressive arsenal of Dead Island.]
I'd recommend playing the first one with a friend. The good news is also that you can transfer your character from pt 1 to riptide with your level and skills intact.

Tough question...
One the one hand I want to suggest playing DI first and then Riptide because there are a lot of improvements that are easy to miss when playing Riptide, but when you play DI after having played Riptide they are noticable and you sure do miss them. (What I'm saying DI could feel worse knowing how things changed in Riptide).

On the other hand I'd like to suggest going with Riptide. It's new and has some minor improvements and the level design feels much "cleaner". Burnout is another issue, after playing thru DI you may not really wish to play Riptide because a lot stays the same.

The story is full of cheese in both games (something I find fitting the genre), so you are not missing out on much.

Note: You can talk to the sidequest giver and then deciede to take the quest or not based on what he has to give as a reward. Sometimes it's a valuable weapon, sometimes not.
