Is this normal in Japan...?
I'm not too familiar with Japanese culture, so maybe this is super normal and I'm just overthinking it...

But, going through some of the Social Links, they have made a few references now to teachers dating their students. IMO, that's pretty cringy and gross. If that happened in the West, that teacher's career and reputation would be flushed down the drain. But it's spoken about so casually. Is it just normal in Japan for teachers to date students?

Of course it's looked down upon. The basic power dynamic alone makes it grossly unethical, country irrelevant.

And don't paint the picture that it's somehow less condoned in the West. Generally, If the teacher were a man, he would lose his career and social reputation by being a registered sex offender. On the flip side: there are plenty of cases in the West of women who have relationships with young boys, and get a bare slap on the wrist. Juries are a hell of a drug,

it's more common in the US than in japan. That said, it fulfils a lot of male fantasies. jrpg boys are quite thirsty

You must have skipped the lines mentioning the fact that it was indeed frowned upon and kind of a taboo thing and most likely not going to happen for obvious reasons but that the guy was still going to try it because love and enjoying his youth or something like that

At first, yes. But as you go deeper into his social link, he talks about going out in public on dates with her like it's nothing.

The Hermit link also mentions dating students as well. And she is very nonchalant about it.

Should we really judge a country by whats happening in a fictional gaming story ?

Yes.

On a more serious note, it's more judging the developers. No one is trying to pin this on an entire country. As I said, I'm not familiar with the culture, that's why I'm asking.

It's something that happens in pretty much every country, and it's viewed just as bad in Japan as anywhere else but i'd say they're more open-minded about the fact that any teenager could have a crush on their hot teacher

A teacher of mine (around 50) dated one of his pupils. Everybody knew. Some peope actually gave 2 sh1ts, but most didn't. A classmate of my brother dated her driving teacher (~20 years age gap) for years. And I live in a fairly small city in the more civilized part of Europe.

So from my experiance, it's not specific to or more common in Japan, that stuff exists anywhere and as long as it is consentual, we should prioritize eliminating the stuff that isn't.

Besides, compared to Persona 5R, where certain stuff DID happen with your teacher on a physical and personal level, P3 showed us little to worry about.

I assume you judge other developers with the same attitude ?

Over sex scenes with bears for example ..

There's two important things here:
1. It's fiction, and so the world we see isn't going to accurately reflect everything. If the author is interested in the concept, they might use it many times where it's statistically unlikely to happen so often. Teachers certainly DO have relationships with students in the west.
2. I can't recall an instance where it's suggested that it's good that it happens, just that it does happen. Also, when Maya looks back over her chat log, she literally undergoes a psychological epiphany because of how much she hates the stuff she wrote there so I don't think we're supposed to take her view on teachers crushing on their students as reasonable.

its so blatant idk who that including it was a good idea. the past creators seemed to really enjoy age gap relationships it was present in 2 and 5 as well
