How to use gifts?

i might be stupid but Items like Book Cover , Brand wallet etc. your supposed to increase your social link progress with these right? how?

assuming this gift system follow P5 formula, player able to give a gift when hangout with a social link who really need many points. The only time i ever give a gift in Persona 5 Royal when i want to rank up Sojiro to rank 3 to 4, the game allow me to gift sojiro with silver bangle

so if you only need like 1 or 2 points the game won't give option to gift because you already get enough points you need to advance next time you hangout with that social link, it needs 3 or more points when doing a hangout with social link that doesn't rank up so the game will give option to give a gift. Question: which social links then? Who knows, i don't gift anyone yet in Reload.
