Personally I don'r think portable was gutted, it definitely suffered in the story telling department, not even bothering to use the vn style to its advantage, but it still had good points. The femc was cool, but no that does not mean she is needed for this remake, it was cool to see the story from an extra or alternative perspective. It was also quicker to navigate in the over world as you had a cursor and could just move it over things. In terms of combat, I like that they got rid of the god awful tired mechanic. or at least changed it, I can't remember if it was gotten rid of entirely. And while I personally think that the tactics menu was fine in fes (but we should have access to knock down and all the tactics from the start), the option to freely control party members is there for people who want it. So while portable definitely had its flaws, it had lots of good things, like skill cards and other things which I haven't mentioned.
