How were you supposed to beat The Shadow of the Void fairly?

I just nuked it from orbit with Armageddon when i saw it annoyingly healing itself. but i wasn't able to make any positive headway with hurting it. is it just a long and annoying fight, or can you put poison or other ailments on it to help out?
