EXP scaling in Tartarus
It took me ~ 1 hour grinding in Tartarus to receive the same amount of EXP that i got from the story boss fight after that which took ~10 minutes -> 34K exp (underground cable monster).
I think this is Atlus' way to stretch playtime. If you'd be awarded the same way in exp per time spent inside Tartarus, the game would take half as long propably. Also it gets really old running the same floors for 2 hours and fighting the same 5 enemies. And if you limit yourself to fight red glowing shadows and rare gloves and on shuffle time always take the EXP bonus, it becomes even more boring and harder to obtain money for better and personas for fusion. Is there a mod to double Tartarus exp so i can spend my ingame time with more meaningful things after i worked for 8 hours on my real life job? Because Tartarus feels like a chore as well.

Also the SP run out after one hour and you have to rely on Fuukas Theurgy which happens randomly or you have to spend your rare and hard earned Twiglight Fragments to recover.

you get less xp if your level is higher than enemies

I honestly have to ask you this: How far along are you in the game ?

Because I just finished the game with little to no grinding and with 2million Yen in my pocket at 91% compendium completion and ended at lvl 88... even defeated The Reaper and took a fair shot at the secret boss.

The game has plenty of stuff to make life easier on you; from multiple tarot draws, double spoils for breaking objects and fighting monsters, permanent stat upgrades, exp boni, catchup mechanics...
SP has the same features; there's plenty of (late-game) abilities that will allow you to stay in Tartarus forever (literally... although I really wonder why you would want to except to grind out for the secret boss) and that's even besides what I stated earlier... I think I had something like 30 Snuff Souls by the end of the game, some 20 Soma's and I didn't need to use a single one.

I'm honestly curious what you've been doing that you "struggle" so much...

Yes exactly. This kind of scaling is my problem. I need this fixed / changed.

i don't struggle. It just takes forever. Twice as much exp, half as much time in Tartarus. That's all i want. I've beaten the game before on the PCSX2, i just used the double speed function in Tartarus and completed the game in less than 40 real life hours. The reaper is a joke once you're on his level, not something i'd brag about. Defeating Lizzie is on another level and i see little point in doing that as the preparations are time consuming and the battle has a rule set i don't wish to follow. Same as Demifiend in SMT V. I want freedom of playstyle, not do as they tell me.

I recall gaming the system to an extreme in the original. I left my party behind and went alone. The exp went up massively.

On the flip side characters below the level of the enemies get a big exp bonus to catch up. The whole point to this leveling system is to maintain a bit of balance, its setup so you can't easily outlevel everything thats current.

the exp you gain is shared with your party,

I do feel like the exp system has changed drastically compared to FES. I still have a lot of time until Nyx, but it feels like it will be a boss that you can easily defeat around level 60, maybe 70 at worst in the normal difficulty. It's nothing like FES. If Atlus is giving less EXP, they pretty much balanced the game around a playstyle that consists of clearing Tartarus until you can't progress anymore, plus the full moon boss. If you're grinding under maniac difficulty it's more because you like Tartarus/the combat rather than obligation, unlike games from that era. It feels a lot more like Persona 5, for example. In Persona 5, it was easy to do pretty much all fights (you even rechead them overleveled) by exploring Mementos for a day or two and defeating the palace boss

See if i run in the school running team (like 2 of your social links do) and i know a tournament is coming up in a few weeks, then I'll go out and train not until i match the other runners times, but until i can safely beat them (like 2 of your social links plan to). And every top athlete in real life also does that. Why stop training if you're even with you competitors? Would a good coach tell you to stop because it would be unfair to the opponent if you got better or if it was less entertaining for the audience?

See i know why Atlus does that, but i think everyone should be able to decide for themselves at what level they want to tackle bosses without the game punishing you for investing more time and energy to improve your odds in that fight.

Then make your own video game?

The design choice was to favor balance and consistent challenge and they have always done it this way. I just finished P5 Strikers and it ALSO uses the same system to balance XP gain and levels despite being an action game. So clearly they have no intention of changing it.

All the Persona and I believe Shin Megami Tensei games use this system.

Play on safety?

Imma be real the game even on merciless is kinda a joke if you use everything available to you. Merciless just feels like a slog as your chars all do 40% or so less damage. The game gives you so much stuff that massivly makes the game easier, Yamagishis Oracle Theurgy being a big one, if most of the team is below half hp and you use it? she'll most likely use a full hp heal, if team is below half SP? she'll use a 50% SP restore for party, if neither of those are met a atk/def/eva/acc buff. You can dupe spell cards daily, one per day, and its instant.

Wanna make Merciless a real joke? farm enemies you can 3 of swords shuffle time cards, get spirit drain and drain ability, these let you for 3 sp, drain 40 sp out of enemies, its basically a free 40 SP heal in battle, I got this combo going early, and my MC basically has unlimited SP now, and can knock everything down by himself in almost all cases. Only issue is when something has no weakness, then its just a slog to kill it as on merciless all your chars hit for 40% or so less damage. Roughly takes double the amount of turns on merciless to kill stuff than normal. Its not really "harder" it just feels more like a slog/grind as during these times I am basically never in any real threat of dying or anything. I've only had 1 game over so far on Merciless, and it happened very early before most of the added features in P3R were available. I'm 40 hours into the run now, still haven't had another game over since.
