Yukari is the best healer for a long battle and can heal ailments, also can debuff the agility, she is extremely frail but her theurgias charge fast, her first theurgia is her best way of attacking and her second is a full party concentrate.
Junpei does a lot of damage with criticals, his magic is awful, but he is extremely resistant and can heal himself with his passive and with his second theurgia, also can buff the whole party's defense and finally. He is the only who can use every type of physical attack.
Akihiko can debuff the attack and buff the agility, his magic is great, can evade his weakness, can heal a party member, his specialty is shocking enemies with electricity and do good physical damage. He and Aigis are the only ones who can attack more than one enemy with their theurgias.
Mitsuru is best magical attacker, has concentrate, a severe magic skill, her second theurgia does damage and debuff the target, she can debuff the defense and her attacks freeze most of the time the enemies, she crits a lot when the enemies has any ailment, her main problem is that she is frail and doesn't have much health like yukari.
Aigis is still a buffer, resist a lot, has enduring soul, her orgia mode theurgia does a lot of damage and her theurgia charges fast if she lands any physical hit, can resist any physical attack, has dekunda to undo any debuff, can heal a party member and nulls dizzy, can recover herself faster of ailments, her second theurgia is the second strongest physical move and doesn't have any second effect like orgia mode.
Ken is a jack of trades, his theurgia charges the fastest when he is low in sp, he recovers sp every turn, he covers light, electricity and pierce, his second theurgia is the best support skill in the game a full party samarecarm with a tetrakarn/makarakarn. Has dekaja, tetrakarn and makarakarn, also he gets heat riser.
Koromaru is a support to do more critical damage with revolution, has debilitate, has two theurgias from the beginning, its second theurgia is a party charge, can buff agilityt, can cover fire, slash and darkness, does a good magic damage. Koromaru is great but struggles with sp, as all of its skills consumes sp.
Shinjiro has an auto heat riser on himself, has bloody charge to do massives amounts of damage, gets endure and debilitate, his theurgia is the strongest physical attack, learns firm stance and regenerate 3
All of them are great but some party members have a better synergie between them like junpei with koromaru and aigis.
As far as the characters themselves are concerned, none of them are useless. Each one has at least one thing going for themselves that the rest of the cast cannot cover. That said, were they all created equal? No. My vote for the weakest companion is Junpei by a country mile--he has full physical coverage and can dip into fire too, which sounds great until you realize that you can have Aigis and her party-wide buffs instead and that you yourself will always cover Slashing. Mitsuru and Koromaru also cover Slashing and offer better utility/better coverage; as if to add insult to injury, Koro also covers fire. I lastly take into account that Koromaru does whine and whimper; however, he still does not do half as much of either as Junpei, and so Junpei is almost always removed from my thoughtful considerations concerning team building.
Apart from Junpei, I have a hard time volunteering any other names for avoidance or irreplaceability. Akihiko makes an underwhelming first impression but he is the only striker that does it for free, grants company-wide tax evasion, and comes with an individual healthcare plan; Yukari offers the premium healthcare package; Ken is the golden child that could use a good smack upside the head but otherwise has a bright future ahead of him; and Shinjiro--well, Shinjiro has no future ahead of him, and I would still take him over Junpei.
