2. No, only FeMC route is out. A bunch of p3p additions remained
They recasted the VAs, removed tired mechanic, tactics are not nearly as detailed, because there's direct commands, the variations of the club (swimming and kendo) you can enter early in the game were removed and track is the only option now (probably to not extend voice acting work)
can't remember many other meaningful things outright removed rn. They were either changed slightly or were just kept in the remake
And yet they're still charging $70 for the game. Though supposedly they're going to add The Answer as DLC in the future, which I'm sure that if they do, they'll charge even more money for it.
Do yourself a favor and don't purchase this cash grab. Play FES and/or Portable instead.
Star Ocean The Second Story R was $50. It didn't cut the additional content from the Second Evolution remake that came out on PSP. It only added content. It overhauled far more gameplay elements than Persona 3 Reload has. It added full voices for pretty much the entire game, giving you options between English VA, the original Japanese VA, or the Second Evolution Japanese VA. The re-arranged soundtrack was almost entirely an improvement over the original Star Ocean 2's soundtrack, but they also give you the option of switching to the original soundtrack. I'm sure I'm missing a lot more really good things they did with Star Ocean The Second Story R, too, but at the end of the day there is absolutely no question that it is the undeniable definitive way to experience that game. Better everything. All of the old content available. New content added. Oh and, again, it released for $50.
I think there are some disappointments like you mentioned, but overall I do think a lot of hard work was put into this game. I personally like the voice acting and music of the original more, I don't like the limiting club thing. But I do think for Atlus this was a lot of time and money put into this game. I feel like considering the answer arc is like 20-35 hours to finish and the base game is like 80 hours it kind of makes sense to sell it as DLC. Still though we don't know for sure that that's more than a rumor of it coming.
I find it more strange that Atlus made such a faithful remake when a lot of their ports or major remasters usually take liberties with the story or add new Story overhauls.
I got this game for 55$ on Humble Bundle so I guess I didn't pay as hard as others did. But I get the complains, but overall it's really good. It's a great way to play it and I'm glad they have P3P on Steam, I just wish I could play FES on Steam too. We don't know how much of the issues, pricing etc were Atlus and how much was Sega though.
Yes they removed some content but replaced it with completely new content.
I still say its worth getting
I really liked star ocean second story r, I finished it and all, but it is a pixel art game and it is a very short game compared to p3 reload, so it is probably much cheaper to make. And I know I for one will get alot more hours of entertainment from P3 reload, as I am no where near completion after spending about the same amount of time that I did in second story R which i did complete.
I hope everyone else enjoys the remake though!
I love the remake, having a blast. The only new VA I didn't like at first was Akihiko's, but he is starting to grow on me.
The old anime cutscenes are gone. There are some new ones, but the major scenes get stuck with 3d animation. Some of it's good, some of it is rough. There is no The Answer chapter (yet), which is disappointing since it's almost certainly going to be $20-30 DLC. Voice Actors were changed (mostly in the English dub), and it seems like some stat increasing actions are... useless now. Ones that previously didn't pass time, now pass time, and ones that gave 3 notes of progress now just give 2 notes of progress, leaving them as just overpriced options you'll touch MAYBE once or twice if you wind up in a situation where you really need to boost that stat and the other options are somehow not available.
This is also, by and far, the easiest version of them all, even with the P3P difficulty modes included. No fatigue mechanic to stop you from overleveling early in (sure, you run out of SP, but it's not quite as effective) nor to stop you from advancing your stats or social links at night in favor of sleeping early. Even if you decide to let the other party members follow tactics instead of orders, it's just right bumper to auto select your best persona, and ability, for the turn, and then once you hit a weakness or score a critical, you just hit left trigger to pick an ally to use one of their abilities to knock the enemy down if you can't do it yourself.
If you get an edition that includes DLC personas, then be warned that they're FREE, and already at the level you would typically encounter them. They're absolutely game breaking, and I now longer have to pay to summon Satanael once I reach the end of the game. One of the strongest persona is just... there.
If you have no way of playing FES, then by all means give this one a go, but FES definitely has the better presentation and game balance, as well as the epilogue chapter. Whatever you do, don't get Persona 3 Portable, because it's still by far the worse rendition of the game.
