Why do people refuse to play the Japanese dub?
Don't wanna sound like a weeb but it just seems more natural to me. Also played persona 5 in Japanese and really enjoyed the voice acting.

I don't speak Japanese.I play games in my own language. The characters don't even look the least bit japanese.

its the whole subs vs dubs argument thats been around since the beginning of time. some people want to be laser focused on whats happening on the screen and refuse to read subtitles.

Reading is difficult for some people. Either because they are young or poor education system. It is nice to have an dubbed option that they can enjoy.

Its not difficult. It just destroys immersion. People speak in real life.

I just can't enjoy something I don't understand, even with subs, it doesn't hit the same, at least for me of course. I prefer being immersed, and obviously if the dub is good I will always 100% prefer dub over Japanese.

1. People are probably used to playing Persona games in english nowadays, given that past games used to never give you a JP dub option.

2. A lot of people, if given a choice, prefer to listen to things in their native language. Some people don't enjoy having to focus harder on subtitles, and some things, such as battle cries/lines, are very often left unsubtitled. Some people have a harder time connecting to characters/story moments if they can't understand the dialogue with their own ears.

3. If you can understand Japanese very well, then you might feel kind of weird hearing the dialogue, but reading subtitles that don't match what you're hearing. (This might not even be because of a bad translation. Some things are just very hard to translate naturally, and some things can be translated a multitude of ways, and the translator might have gone with one option that you wouldn't have chosen.)

I will say that generally, I think both the English and Japanese voice casts of the persona games have been excellent. I prefer certain characters in one language over the other, but I don't think you can go wrong with either one. People should just go with the one they feel like listening to. Glad that you enjoy the JP voice acting!

Its mostly americans that play the english dub so that's understandable

I just like being able to understand what people are saying by ear. If I understood japanese, I totally would listen to the japanese dub. I don't though, so it just sounds like very expressive gobbledygook to me.

Because my native language is English and I can actually understand it.
Also, I just don't wanna read when I can just listen.

But if I play a game that only has Japanese Voice acting, I tend to set Voice Volume to 0% because it's distracting while reading it.

Unless I'm watching anime then it's going to traditionally be english dub when I'm playing games since I'm going to be active rather than passive (plus I'm a sloppy multi-tasker).

I prefer Japanese dubs, no one is gonna stop me from enjoying them, same goes for people who enjoy English dubs, no one is gonna stop them. Different tastes you know?
Hymnos Feb 1, 2024 @ 6:04pm
English is not my first language so it's no different for me, both Japanese or English dub I still need to read the subtitles but If I had to choose I still prefer playing the game with Japan dub.

I mean, the first top comment nailed it.
I only speak and understand 1 language, so I'm obviously going to consume media in it.

None of the arguments I always hear have convinced me either;, I often hear people say things like "Oh but the Japanese actors sound better", to which I say... How do you know?
I can't agree with that since I literally have no experience with the language. I don't have context about their cadence, inflections, sentence structure etc. etc. to make that judgement when it all just sounds like 'noise' to me. (And a lot of Anime or stuff from the Yakuza games for instance really just comes across as over exaggerated yelling/screaming, I'm sure it's meant to convey passion or something if you understand it, but it's alien to me)

The question just never makes sense to me:
Do you want a version where you can appreciate and applaud the VA work using established context from your own understanding - or do I want a version that I cannot.
