Double Checked a FES Model, Models Are Not Censored in Reload
I've seen some discussion here that propagates the notion that ATLUS has somehow censored the battle models of female party members. It stems from Yukari's trailer.

I was pretty sure this was off the mark, knowing how low res the FES models were. So I went and checked Yukari's FES model, and what do you know... ATLUS has done no such thing. In reality what has happened is actually a pretty neat demonstration of technological advancement.

First off, let's talk textures. In P3FES, a model has seven separate diffuse textures. One 128x128 texture for the upper clothes, three 64x128 textures (for the eyes, face/hands, and lower body/armband), two 64x32 textures (evoker, and hair), and one 32x64 texture (for the mouth). These are incredibly small images so compromises were made in texturing the models. What is relevant here is the lower body/armband texture. So here's what it looks like.

I think it's pretty clear that there's no censorship of in-game models considering that Yukari's model in the trailer replicates the shadow baking of the original texture. It's just handled in engine.

The dark spots under Yukari's skirt are shadows, both on the original model and the Reload model. People complaining about ATLUS censoring "upskirt shots" are not familiar with rendering, nor the original assets.

its kinda neat they're in engine shadows to show off the power of ue4, i never bothered to move the camera that way when i played p3 though

Yeah, the only time the camera could show the area underneath Mitsuru or Yukari's skirts was during downed animations. At that point the player is likely to preoccupied with getting them back up to notice.

What's interesting to me is how they did it in P3P, to save space on the UMD they just added a face comprised of the lower edges of the skirt and clipped them through the legs of the models. It might not seem like a lot, but the skirts are double sided in FES so this really cuts down the amount of vertices used.

All right then. Let's see how it looks like in Reload.
