I'd recommend you buy Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne on Steam or Shin Megami Tensei 5 on the Nintendo Switch if you "hate school setting", in the Persona games you spend a lot of time in school so you probably won't like any of them.

i have played both these games on switch (in japanese two^^) and enjoyed them immensly. SMT3 nocturne particularly was insanely good with a unique atmosphere etc^^

Yeah part of what makes Persona, Persona is the School setting and with 3 to 5 the associated Social Link Mechanics.

-3 represents the first introduction of the Social Link system and is relatively dark.
-4 represents a significant deviation into a relatively happy and upbeat entry. Stress put on relatively.
-5 has a lot of focus on Japanese Social Issues in more of a Man v. Society kind of framework. Be aware if you didn't like Teddy, that a Teddy like character is present.

The main thing to understand coming from 4 is that's the... "Happy" one. Also do mind the Persona 3 Portable remaster is on Steam, so you don't need to buy this Reload version to play Persona 3.

Both fantastic games. The best way to get your money's worth is wait a bit for the next P5 Royal sale, that's usually 40%-50%, and play the heck out of it until P3 Reload goes on sale too.

play p2 ep if you hate school settings, its the best game and only the first dungeon is in a school and then you go to other crazy places afterwards
innocent sin is also good since you only go to 2 schools as dungeons but it doesnt have adult characters like ep does, youngest character in ep is 18 and the oldest is 32

Please be aware that said OG Playstation title has not been legally ported to PC, and while Sony does have storefronts where it can be purchased those are for hardware that's no longer in production.

yeah thats fair atlus made it really hard to play any of their games asides from a handful, although its easy to use retroarch on steam and play them with cloud saves. i guess thats what happens when you're a fan of a game studio that doesnt port games at all though

Personally I would suggest 5 as it's a more modern itteration on persona than the remake of 3. IMHO it'll be easier for you to get into....

If you're looking for any great JRPG to play though... here's some suggestions

Tactical JRPG: Trouble shooters (Think X-com but anime; very underrated atm, imho, but great story and VERY content rich)

Storydriven Classic JRPG: Just about any Final Fantasy, Go >10 for anything more action oriented or 10 or below for turnbased (and available rather cheap-ish). Do note that both 11 and 14 are subscription based MMO's though
