i have played both these games on switch (in japanese two^^) and enjoyed them immensly. SMT3 nocturne particularly was insanely good with a unique atmosphere etc^^
-3 represents the first introduction of the Social Link system and is relatively dark.
-4 represents a significant deviation into a relatively happy and upbeat entry. Stress put on relatively.
-5 has a lot of focus on Japanese Social Issues in more of a Man v. Society kind of framework. Be aware if you didn't like Teddy, that a Teddy like character is present.
The main thing to understand coming from 4 is that's the... "Happy" one. Also do mind the Persona 3 Portable remaster is on Steam, so you don't need to buy this Reload version to play Persona 3.
I've got you covered. Get this instead:

innocent sin is also good since you only go to 2 schools as dungeons but it doesnt have adult characters like ep does, youngest character in ep is 18 and the oldest is 32
Personally I would suggest 5 as it's a more modern itteration on persona than the remake of 3. IMHO it'll be easier for you to get into....
If you're looking for any great JRPG to play though... here's some suggestions
Tactical JRPG: Trouble shooters (Think X-com but anime; very underrated atm, imho, but great story and VERY content rich)
Storydriven Classic JRPG: Just about any Final Fantasy, Go >10 for anything more action oriented or 10 or below for turnbased (and available rather cheap-ish). Do note that both 11 and 14 are subscription based MMO's though
imagine Persona 4 and Mad Max
