Should I play P3R or portable for the first time?

Huge P5 fan, and never played P3. Which should I experience for the first time?

If you started Persona with P5, you're likely to feel the most comfortable with P3R. P3P may feel a bit antiquated to you, but if you want to be familiar with P3 in advance of P3R, P3P is the most accessible way to go about that at the moment.

You should probable play P3 Reload first if you like P5. P3P or portable is like a novel version of the game.

FES > Portable for a first run.

Keeps the city exploring, cutscenes, intended battle mechanics, 3D characters during dialogue scenes......

Portable had to cut a lot of things to fit on a PSP. Even if it has some improvements (that can just be modded onto FES), and a Female Character route (which is neat but also has some optional really bad additions).

But at this point it’s either FES or Reload

Do yourself a favor and play P4 before P3 instead. Closer to P5 and better under 90% of its aspects (minus graphics for obvious reasons) then FES.

Thanks, I've already beat P4 twice - good game as well, albeit a bit dated compared to P5.

Reason I recommend P3FES as a first game is mostly because the later games do a lot of the things it does but better. But if you play P3FES first, you don't know any better so theres nothing to compare to.

P4 is my favorite, but the same also applies there since P5 improves gameplay a lot so playing it last makes sense.

if youre used to visual novels just play p3p. Save a lot of time compared to exploring an overworld

Don't start with p3p, you can play it for some new tidbits and stuff after playing FES or P3R, but it doesn't have proper cutscenes and Femc route is only good if you are a big fan of p3 or just exhausted everything in the game
