You do have to buy new routes however.
to use auto sail you need 3 things
1- a map person work in mapping room (high skills allow to auto sail to long distance)
2-you need to buy a map chart from item shop or from black market or u get it from quest or u get it by trading in the sea from merchant ships or from pirate, once you have the chart you have to use it from item list to unlock the auto sail for those locations
3-you must visit the city's in the chart first, if you never visit them before u cannot auto sail to them,
note: in the start new game menu there is info bank that act like a shop to buy special stuff to be used for new game, you can buy the world chart from there, and the currency points u get it from many things in the game like discovery, own many kinds of ships, see events and endings, etc
if you start a new game and use the world chart then it will unlock auto sail for all city's in the world but you still need to visit the city's first before u can auto sail
