How can I kick out a hired skilled sailor?

I have hired a skilled sailor in the tavern for 1000/month. I do not need him anymore. There is a retire button on the screen where you can assign characters to positions. But this button didn't do anything, the guy is still with me (even after I went into a port, then left). How can I kick him out?

Should be able to do it via the tavern menu:
There's a Hired Sailors sub-menu. At the bottom, it says "Please select Seafarers to Hire or Fire."
