Any beginners guide on Guilds?
They seem super-expensive and the in-game explanations are not very clear. What do they do? How do I use the trade fleets?

If you dont have a guild the Population, Tech and Trade stats go to waste as they dont increase the amount of products you can purchase at each town, a guild opens up the upgrades for each town based on each of those 3 stats. It also lets you invest into the guild which will speed up how fast the town develops, and will allow the town to develop to its fullest. Trade fleets are a waste as they are, they barely worth sending since you need to go back to that town anyway to take what those trade fleets brought you. And they are not really that expensive since you dont need to pay the whole sum of money, 300k for each stat is overkill but i pay this much as especially late in game you do 1 milion easy with 1 trade and there are not really any other reasons to spend money, and paying this much allows me to develop towns to maximum at the fastest possible speed.
rising guild is very expensive if you start with 300 tech. but if you clear all chapter, all port will grow at 600 tech. with this you can build guild and invest each of them just with 300k. so in 1 port you can spend 900k to build max stat for the port.
to not waste any time, reach 800 contribution first and unlock all feature of that port (advance port investment) so you just need invest one times.
if you want to invest when 300 tech the cost will be 500k for each stat so it's total 1.5M.
Use the "Beginner's Guide to Sailing Era" in the guides section. The one on guilds is down near the bottom. Hope this helps with guilds. Only thing is now you don't need other mats to start a guild. they removed that.

Also trade fleet are used from within the guild and you can pick what item you want them to concentrate on bringing back to that port.

if you are a new player i advice you to make a guild in china and japan its the fastest way to gain money in the game

forget about trade ships it waste alot of game time just focus on guild investment and buy and sell to increase your money and the city contribution

invest in Hangzhou first then zhangzhou then Nagasaki then Sakai

try to invest most of your money in trade investment coz once your trade reach 800 then the city will sell premium product which cost the same to buy but sell for alot more money

in Hangzhou buy celadon, silk and (blue and white porcelain which is unlocked from 100 contribution from government house) and sell all those in Nagasaki and Sakai

in zhangzhou buy celadon, silk, tea and sell to Nagasaki and Sakai

in Nagasaki buy (katana which is unlocked from 1000 contribution from government house) and laquerware and sell in Hangzhou and zhangzhou

in Sakai buy katana and laquerware and sell it in Hangzhou and zhangzhou

once you maximum all your guild investment on them then you can make money very fast anytime you want leave china-japan area then fill your ship with celadon, silk and blue and white porcelain and continue your exploring adventure and sell them anywhere you like

and you can buy 4 large f.uchuan from Hangzhou and zhangzhou and modify them to add 1 more warhouse for each ship, develop kolkata to maximum and build a tea clipper there which need 55 days to build use tea clipper as your flag ship to sail very fast to trade
For gift shops and inventory shops and book shops, population 40k and tech and trade 600 will bring all the stuffs. (starting from chapter 3, all ports will go above 600 so only population to invest in)

For shipbuilding parts, population 40k and tech and trade 800 are needed to give the ultimate parts.

Hangzhou and Amsterdam tech 1000 will trigger book printing technology event, which restock book shops once a year. (Hangzhou restock Asian ports and Amsterdam European)

But there are discovery clues and other events that will not happen if you dont have much more tech and trade, some will need 800 some 1000, so saying you dont need more than 600 is a very bad advice cause you dont know if he plans to find everyting or not, hell if he only plans to complete the story than guilds are not needed at all.

No some clues ive seen appeared only after i revisited when maxing out a port, i usually get contribution to 1000 first than pay 300k for each stat in guild and come back after a port gets to max. So i cant say if its 800 or more but there are events that trigger higher stats of the port, like the mentioned Hangzhou event. But yes a lot more clues are tied to contibution. Still at the point you actually usually start making more guilds you have enough money that they are not problem and if you really want to get all discoveries and events you should be maxing out ports since there is no real guides out there naming all ports that have events happen at based on port stats.
guys, while only Contribution is on the list to be boosted, sinking pirate boss or reporting discoveries is way faster and more economic than investing cash through guilds.

Contribution to clues:

Diu 500
Alexandria 800
Samarai 500
Arguim 500
Tumbes 300
Riga 300
Lima 800
Crete 500
St George 800
Hangzhou 800
Gia Dinh 800
Sakai 800
London 100 (for William to spawn)

And what does investing cash have to do with contribution? Do you even know what you are talking about or did you make a random reply without even thinking once? Investing in guilds does NOT increase contribution but increases TECH, POPULATION and TRADE WHICH NONE CAN BE INCREASED ANY OTHER WAY THAN BY USING GUILDS, so there is no "MORE ECONOMIC" way to do this. Yes fighting pirates be it bounties or pirate leaders and discovery reporting are best ways to increase contribution but those are methods that dont give you as much money as trading would as such you will later find yourself with a lack of money to make guilds in all ports and use money to start them on fastest development. But those are for contribution and guilds are for port development something you clearly missed.

Oh Sorry My Bad, i make a foolish mistake. I here kneel and Kowtow for Your celestial forgiveness.

I guess we come here to share our findings in game and not to start any fight bro. And i guess i have at least shared how much Contribution needed in certain ports for clues, and the Development needed for certain goods and books and shipparts in the corresponding shops. I translate and summarise them from China and Taiwan sites. Such info is not yet found no this Steam Forum

To answer "is for clue just need to rise contribution". Yes and No. No while some clues need more than Contribution, like the plot of Japan Barmaid requires Beatrice Katelyn Sassi. Yes while i find no clue is related to Tech or Trade of a port. (with exception you wont miss, like Palembang needs Guild investment in YUN's main questline)

And just "Max out" investment may not be the answer some players want, mainly becasue of immersion. Cuz you may want to raise a port stat NOT by too much, to avoiding, said, Tunsia become 50000 1000 1000. You may want the world development make some sense and thus Invest Seville London into 1000 and keep Tunisia 800

i guess this cant be "very bad advice" huh?

in my founding tech, population and trade can be increase by playing after end of the story. can't reach max but it it can make investment more cheap. to rise max the rest is to use guild investment.
other that i found is only certain port that to be rise to max and usually is very important that have item store, blackmarket, equipment shop, bookstore, gift shop and ship material shop which you will invest it if you really want to clear it completely.
lucky from new update you can get contribution to all port by defeating pirate leader in dangerous area in that region.
