So with that in mind, I personally prefer to have no fore or aft sails on my support ships, and only fore and aft sails on my flag ship. The rare ones of course, when possible.
The information given in the modify screen is only partially there. To see the full effect of each sail you will need to check the fleet screen.
Generally, the parts that are the same rarity and change the same stat, but less of it, will have a steering bonus, or visa versa. (Steering malus on high stat parts)
Different ports offer different sails, but choices are still pretty limited. I believe you need to get some blueprints to unlock rare sails for the main masts.
honestly once you get clippers it doesn't matter but i still max out square sails on them .
interestingly enough , the large fu chuan is a great ship for cargo so i usually have lead as clipper and 4 large fu chuan as mules .
