Online coop does not work

My son and I have the game. Neither of us can join the other online. We invite, the other sees the invite through steam console, we accept. Nothing happens. At all. We go to just "join" and again, nothing happens. we can see that the other is playing. It just will not join. Also, we have the settings multiplayer set to friends only, and when you go to the Boti Join menu, it only filters "all". Does not update to friends only. What's up?

My boyfriend and I played today. We tried inviting each other, but it didn’t work. However, after he started the game, I was able to join him about 5 minutes in by going through the game menu, selecting 'Join Game,' and then choosing his name. I agree that the game is quite buggy.
