Linux + SteamOS game not loading
Game was working fine then recently stopped loading after clicking play. Checked files, re-installed and it worked fine. Next day same issue. Anyone having this type of issue?

Anyone get past this? I'm getting it too when I try to run the Linux version.

So here is a workaround for the Linux users. This is working for me on Ubuntu 18.04 with Wine 3.0. Setup up Proton and download JA2WF with one of the Proton builds. Doesn't matter which one because it doesn't work, at least for me, and you just need the Windows version installed on your system.

Then head to the command line. If you're using LInux, I'm assuming this isn't scary for you. Go to the installation folder for JA2WF, in ../Steam/steamapps/common/ja2_wildfire/install. You'll have to know where your steam programs go. In there is a file called wf.bat. You want to edit that file so it looks like this (make a copy first). Just make the lines between the start end file lines.

-------- start file, don't include this line ------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

;Classic search, full path in title bar and address bar.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\iDeal-Games\JA2 Wildfire]
"Registration"=hex:3c,2f,6f,22,a3,a0,50,22,58,8f,60,22,1e,2d,ad,20

-------- end file, don't include this line ------

You could also just cut and past that into a file, but I'm showing where it comes from because I think this is what is causing the Proton build to fail. Kind of betting that the batch file processing isn't working right and craps out before it can enter the key for JA2WF to run. Maybe someone else has an idea.

Now, at the command line, type 'winetricks' (install it if you don't have it). Select the default prefix. Run the registry editor. In regedit, click on File->Import Key and then select the file you just created above with the registry info in it. You can check it by following that [HKEY_CURRENT_USER....] line up there to tell you where to look for it. You should have a key in that location called Registration. Exit regedit.

Now click on "Install a Windows DLL or component" and install dxd9_36, or other one above that. Not sure if the default one is ok, I chose the _36 one because of the comments in winetricks. Now close winetricks.

At the command line, go up a directory to ../Steam/steamapps/common/ja2_wildfire. Now type:

wine ./WF6.exe

and it should come up. I then set it up as another application in Steam so I have it there, but I can also start it up from the command line just as easily.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Linux version downloaded from Steam also does not start on Manjaro (Arch).

Couldn't get it to work either with Manjaro. No wf.bat File here also... This is not okay... will try to refund and get a cracked version...

You don't need the file. If you can get it to the point of it asking for a license key, just use the text above to create a new file and import it in.

Hey. Managed to get it working. Created a new topic for easier access.
wf.bat is not created in native version and you need to swithc to Steam Play version. Follow the steps within the link below and it will appear, but the file is not necessary for you as Mustang MR stated.
