I suspect this may be because when you create your own server you can't change the setting to allow late joins. By default it is false. When browsing servers, you can join by filling in the Enter the Name field. But you can only enter five characters there. And it is not known whether it is the name of the server or the name of the user who set up the server.

As far as controls I can teach you, but you'll also learn pretty quick through experimentation too. I'd encourage you to use your mouse on a high DPI setting (when trying to thrust, etc.) so that small inputs have larger outputs. Don't be discouraged if it's difficult cause both players sorta need to know what they're doing to make it work but it can work well!
